A lot of heroic redneck Trump supporters selflessly putting themselves on the line right now to rescue the democrats who discriminate against them.

I wonder if something like this could ever happen to Toronto. Not a hurricane, but a massive rainfall that leads to flash-flooding the whole city
2013.

126 mm of rain in a couple of hours.

This on top of nonstop rain in the days before which had swollen creeks and saturated the ground.

Still nothing compared to Huston.

A lot of heroic Democrat supporters are selflessly putting themselves on the line right now to rescue Republicans that discriminate against them as well. What's your point?

The 3 Houston mosques that are unaffected by the floods are open for shelter.
The "Christian" church of Joel Osteen (small church, only holds ~16,000) is locked up tighter than an oil drum, and drier than an armadillo's fart in west Texas.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Hazel

The effects of Hazel were particularly unprecedented in Toronto, due to a combination of heavy rainfall during the preceding weeks, a lack of experience in dealing with tropical storms and the storm's unexpected retention of power. Hazel had traveled 1,100 km (680 mi) over land, but while approaching Canada, it had merged with an existing powerful cold front. The storm stalled over the Greater Toronto Area, and although it was now extratropical, it remained as powerful as a category 1 hurricane. To help with the cleanup, 800 members of the military were summoned, and a Hurricane Relief Fund was established that distributed $5.1 million (2009: $41.7 million) in aid.

President Trump and the First Lady on their way to Houston as we speak. Yes, they plan to land and not just fly over.

Unbelievable. Some places around the vicinity of Houston have already received over a meter of rain, with days more rain to come. While the worst of the rain will recede as Harvey travels to the right of the city, they still can't begin to recover until this weekend.

It is all good. Americans do not believe in Climate Change and have dropped out of the accord to battle it.

WTF is needed is a deeper understanding of how to ameliorate a Hurricane (and tornadoes)

Some ideas are being studied but as to why we use scientific currency to fly to Mars instead of using it to solve serious earthly issues befuddles me.

Yes, we need to explore for its own sake but after we solve serious earthly problems

We should have figured out how to turn salt water into fresh in a economical way by now . But instead, we use scientific genius to do something that offers nothing to humanity like fly to the moon.

If we can fly to the moon we can control hurricanes.
