Dont pick/rip/entice the scab off.

Hence, stay off your knees for a bit:(

Cover it at night. Let it breath during the day for short periods of time if you aren't doing calls and not wearing clothes over the knee. Apply poly (or whatever) 3 times a day as recommended. When it scabs over apply the Vitamin "E" cream the other guys recommend. (Don't pick scab.)

Go to the health food store and get some powdered goldenseal. Goldenseal is a plant that they grind up into a greenish gold powder, you will only need a gram or so. Apply the powder directly to the wound, it will heal faster than you ever thought possible. Big drug companies don't want you to know about goldenseal, try it and you will be amazed.

the thing about not covering a wound isn't a bad idea but the problem is if you're moving around etc and you don't have it covered with an antibacterial ointment is that it could get infected and you DON'T want that.

Now if it's on your knee and the wound opens when you bend your knee, you have to put something on it else it will continually pull open and will scar like an SOB. You HAVE to keep it closed so it can scab to as thin a line as possible. If you let it scab while partially open it will scar. If you go to the pharmacy they have things called suture strips. Docs use it to close wounds on your face because stitches will scar. They hold like a stitch but don't leave a lasting mark. (I speak from experience).

I put tiny Band-Aids on it for now holding the cut together until i can get to the drug store and buy the thing you speak of...lol

but the knee is a really crap place to get a cut, i play soccer too, i dont know how im going to keep this thing closed...lol

There is stuff that you can get at shoppers that is made for healing scars and stretch marks. Its an orange liquid. I don't know whats in it, but it works.

Thanks

Sorry to hear about your accident! If it is really deep you might want to consider stitches. The issue with deep cuts is that the surface can heal, but sometimes, deeper below, and infection can start, especially if the area deepest in the cut is not closing like the surface is.

i had to get 8 stitches after a nasty fall, and the nurse insisted i keep it covered up all the time. im using extra large band aids, and polysporin,
though i would rather something that wasn't petroleum based.

Celest swears by emu oil (externally) and vitamin E (internally). Im going to go get some goldenseal since reading this thread.

I've also used a product called scar gel, which i hope to find once i get the stitches taken out and it has healed up.

TRX mentioned jelonet if you want to keep the wound covered and it is a really good idea. It will keep the wound moist while covered. Maya there is a polysporin cream you can use. If you are really worried about scarring the drugstore at Sunnybrook hospital carries something that will really help. I had to have surgery on my arm and it really helped. I forget what it's called but it's a silicone based sheet that you cut to size to fit your wound and will really reduce scarring if you end up with any. The products you can buy in the drugstore don't compare to it.

If you are going to get stitches, they usually have to be done fairly soon after the accident as once the healing process begins stitches won't make a difference anymore.
The Vitamin E helps once the scab has started forming. When you apply it often enough, the scab will remain soft so it doesn't get caught on any clothing or anything else, and may help it from cracking when you bend the knee. I usually break open the Vitamin E capsules and apply the oil directly onto the new scab. I find it best in the evening when I can sit with nothing touching it, just remember that if it is not all absorbed before you go to bed it may stain the sheets.

I don't know the name off hand, but the doctor can give you an ointment better then polysporin, it is also a type of antibiotic. I always swear by polysporin, because I get cut at work all the time and go through a hundred band-aids every few months. I always keep the wound and bandage clean. I heal fast as well like real life wolverine.:)

If you can handle the pain, take a fresh utility blade clean it well with rubbing alcohol and cut away the dead flesh. This should help it heal faster but probably scar.

I would go see you doctor.

I would suggest that - if you sincerely want to maximize your chances of having as small a scar as possible - you might want to refrain from playing until it's had a chance to heal up a fair bit. Every time you tear that scab open you likely increase the scarring.

I got a bad cut on my face a couple of years ago & I got some odd advice.... in addition to vitamin E I was given patch of smooth medical grade silicone & told to cover the scar with it backed by a compress bandage.... Don't know how it does it but it worked amazingly... better than just vitamin e on other cut I've had

Why don't you want to go to the emergency room? That is what you need, not a load of ointments band aids and vitamins.
