Most of my friends around my age are married, I'd say 75%. I can't recall seeing that situation ever ... it sounds terrible. When I see my married friends, it seems like a marriage of equals or they are best friends, supportive of each other. Some of these people have been married 15, 20, years or more. Your cousins situation does not sound good and I don't think it is normal based on my experience. :-(
I think your are absolutely right that is what a healthy marriage sounds like according to my research on relationships. I have always had expectations and delusions of what relationships are, they were always just based on pure lust which fizzles in a few years no matter your race. financial situation or how many kids you have together.
+1 Yeah fuck that, it's not worth it no matter how hot they are. I would go crazy, I hate when anybody tries to control me. This is prevelant in European people I find...yes I was born in EU.
Do you guys lay down the law with the wives by being assertive from the day you first met them? Doesn't the thought/fear or divorce make you guys back down?
You've got to. It's very difficult to try and make a stand after your wife has already lost respect for you and thinks she can berate you with impunity.
When woman is negative mood or stressed, they hen peck.
The situation described in the dinner party is typical hen pecking.
Remember your own mother? Did mom ever hen peck yourself or dear old dad? Did you or dad blow a gasket when the hen pecking started, or just get use to it, just wait it out, as it always finishes itself out. Mom always gets exhausted eventually, but got it all out. Do something nice for her next, and she all smiles, and loves you a lot.
That is a relationship.
If you cannot stand it, the hen pecking, the moody state of a woman, you are not ready for a real relationship. Period.
It is a relationship, but not a very good one; at least not for him.
It's okay to be moody, depressed, angry, happy, you name it. But apart from that there are ways to treat people are acceptable and there are other ways that are not. It's possible to disagree without being disagreeable. Telling someone they're wrong on a point of fact is okay. Telling someone you disagree with their opinion is okay. Finishing by insulting them or openly undermining them is not okay. This is what the hapless hero of this thread is getting. His wife is treating him with contempt.
My parents had their disagreements. So did my aunts and uncles, and so did my siblings and their spouses. But I have NEVER heard any of them say anything inappropriate to each other, ever. This is what it means to show respect. And for the record, except for one aunt who divorced early on and then remarried, her second marriage and all the other marriages of the senior family members ended when death did them part after several decades, or they're still married.
Really? Regularly breaking stuff is way over the line. Did she learn this from her own parents? If it is, ask her if this is the kind of relationship she wants for herself. We all have choices.
And for all you men who are dating, you should welcome the chance to meet her parents on their turf. Then observe how her mom treats her dad, because that's what you'll be getting from her.

:hippie:
Again, I disagree. Hen pecking is an apt description because this is how hens attack. They don't have claws or teeth, so this is how they fight. They take jabs at their victim. It's about gaining, re-gaining, or keeping control.
Take note ladies. Us guys are looking for a wife, not another mother.
This book will set the whole 'female empowerment' thing back by decades, but evidently it's good for marriages that are struggling for a certain reason. http://lauradoyle.org/store/the-books/surrendered-wife-sample-chapter#control
