lol I'm the oposite!

I can think of a bunch of things I'd buy at Futureshop right now!

128MB CF Card for my Digital Camera
USB Hub
Wireless access point for my laptop
...

:D
Ok maybe I should have stipulated, I coulnd't find anything that I could "afford".

I would love to have one of the Sony CD mavica's, but they are still a little out of my price range!

Cool of you to have a duallie  I'm prolly going the xeon path shortly (whenever them requirements materialize), SMP + HT can't be ignored given the current situation.

Do some distributed computing, it will heat your place!!!

I love dualies! 2 monitors, 2 hard drives, 2 chips, 2 case fans, 2 PSU fans. It is always good to have extras!

My first was a dual celeron 500, when the old abit bp6's came out! I thought it was the sweetest thing ever!

Then I built my dual p3 and fell in love again! Although I almost kicked the damn thing to the curb when it kept spontaneously crashing on me. I was about 2 days away from saying screw it and going to a dual xeon myself but then I figured out the problem! Uncompatable sticks of RAM! Well needless to say it got pulled pretty quickly! Stable as a ROCK ever since!

With a simple application of some artic silver paste on my chips they run pretty cool with stock fans at about 35 degrees.

Interesting that we got to Page 3 before anyone mentioned having even one Macintosh! For the record, here's my setup, all Macs (though I do ask the G4 to pretend to be a PC on rare occasions when I need to run a program I'm asked to evaluate):

Dual 500 MHz G4, 640 MB RAM, 40+80 GB disks
350 Mhz iMac 640 Mb RAM 20 GB disk

and 3 very old ones (don't ask why:)

13-year old Mac II si about to be retired
Power Mac 6600/66
Powermac 7200/90 (which my wife uses for writing her books)

Xsense Router and Dlink hub to connect them all, plus a 600 MhZ iMac I'm looking after temporarily.

Why Macs? In January and February 1984 I was looking for a machine my computer-illiterate wife could use for writing, and was about to sign for an IBM PC when I saw a demo Mac and decided that, unlike the PC, it was a machine she could actually use. When we bought it, we were told it was the second one sold in Toronto. It turned out that she could indeed use it, and I could typeset the books for her to a standard acceptable to the publishers, and we've been a Mac household ever since, with no regrets.

You got a decent amount of power going :) I have a few seti WU from days past, although nothing near my g@h or prime95 score. Your P4's must be doing you justice on the seti score, (I recently "loaned" my farm to a buddy doing seti and he was amazed with the 35 WU daily production).

What are you crunching?

whatever my work requires me to crunch.

the details of this are covered under NDAs with my clients and as such I am not at liberty to discuss this. [however it has helped me save 1400 jobs over the last few years that otherwise would have been lost]

but yes, lots of cpu tends to help when crushing hugely long prime numbers amongst other things.

it also runs DOOM really well ;-)

So Much Power

wow, peeping, all that power and you dont use it to control the world. So it takes that much power to chat and post messages, ?
just kidding, dont have your computer shut my life down. Nice computer, nice compy.

Actually I have a 286 Pantium 2 ( 2 panties tied together holding the case together) 129 kilobites of ram, 2 hard drives, one 450 mb, and one 150mb. I do have wirless mouse, more like a hamster which actually eats cheese occasionally and lets out the odd rotten fart which makes my computer freeze and crash and try to visit www.DR.Kevorkian.com hint hint,

I may not have all that power ( I would rule the world if I did)
, but when I chat with my webcam, I use my $8,000.00 Sony 3 chip broadcast camera for that liflelike image so when I moon someone with my webcam, they really get the feel. Thats reaching out and touching somebody.

Crunching ? yah I do lots when I get those honey roasted peanuts with the little shinny honey on them. But I am not at liberty to discuss that any further.

I always get my computer stuff at Zellers , where the lowest IQ is the law.

Sasha, Mavica, expensive ?? I have 2 words for you

...the P4 2.26 ghz takes 3 hours per WU, but I'm running the text client and not the screen saver...performance of the Mac is disappointing in regards of processing time per WU. The dual G4 takes 10 hours per WU in the screen saver version. I just started to run the text client for Mac as well and that means I can process 2 WU at the same time; but it's still a lot slower than the P4 2.26 Ghz. The G4 Powerbook takes 20 hours per WU.
In total I complete 30 WU a day.

what do you mean "any day now" ?? you can get 2 and 4 way socket 603/604 boards and the hyperthreading cpus to go in them RIGHT NOW!

teehee... 4way Xeon 4HT.... shows up to the bios and W2k/RH8] as an 8way. American Super Micro makes a really good board for this, pricey, big, bulky but really very very nice.

an orgy of cpu :)

grins.

What do you think I've been spending all that money on????

and all of it has a nice return on investment.

I may sometimes be criticised for being obnoxious some days, but when the something smelly hits the fan take a guess who gets called to clean up the mess/save the day/etc. ???

I take my work deadly seriously because yes, it really is kinda rather important that it get done swiftly, decisively and PROPERLY.

my clients tend towards issuing mandates with phrases like "by whatever means necessary". [and they pay extremely well these days]

dont worry, the prices on systems stay the same, the systems just get FASTER AND BETTER ALL THE TIME.

example: last weeks unit price on maxtor 120gig 7200rpm udma133/8meg buffer hard disks was $215 [I buy in 5 packs usually] 2 or 3 months ago, the price was about $350/drive.

I'm waiting patiently for maxtors new 320gig drives to be released in quantity.

I've been somewhat BUSY since 9/11 and Enron .... I havent had this much fun since the 80s. [when the world was normal]

time to go play in the snow...

I have one computer. Runs on Windows XP, has lots of memory.

CyberGoth, I should get you to help me, and get some more memory. I also need a laptop..... or something small to take with me when I travel. Are blackberries worth dishing out $500- for?- the highend ones cost that much.

Diane. :D
Hi D. wrt: memory, laptop etc, No Problem, call me.

wrt: blackberries, I know a bunch of people who use them and are quite happy with them. do you think its worth the $500? would it bring you an advantage that can translate into practical realworld benefit?

Generally those little blackberry units are very cool. [but there will be ongoing service fees for the connectivity]

I find that laptops are way more useful due to the flexibility.

but dang, them thar new fangled blackberry units are CUTE!!!

I'm not worthy

Wow, do I feel under powered!

3 computers:

The work lap top (Dell Latitude) which is pretty good but heavy

Apple iMac that my daughter uses

IBM Lap top that my wife uses

Dial up at home (I know, I know) but T1 at work.

I'm not counting my RIM and Palm.

Diane, I have one of the large RIMs, the single advantage to me is always on wireless e-mail access. If that's worth it buy one, if not...

The screen saver client sucks, on whatever OS you run it on - cli version vastly superior. As for the mac's, if seti is your thing, keep doing it, but keep in mind that RC5-72 has started and once they release the optimized Altivec core, the macs would do some serious production.

Odd behaviour on the part of the P4's with respect to seti. I can't figure this out, given that seti runs very well without a SSE2 optimized core, whereas almost any DC client runs really bad due to the crappy FPU, save for prime95 with its SSE2 core. I would be tempted to say it handles FFT calculation (common to both clients) very well, but the pre SSE2 prime95 client shows this is wrong. The other obvious candidate is memory bandwidth - tweaking bios settings results in big productivity gains for both seti and prime95 on the AMD's, but with prime95 on a P4 my benchmarking shows little relation to band increases. On top of that is the odd behaviour of VHAR units on the northwoods - if you log results you might have already noticed the crunch time often drops to around two hours.
