I can pick up quite a few cell call on the 859 -870 Mhz range just using my scanner from radio shack. It's entertaining to hear the stuff, particularly late at night. Lots of drug deals, people cheating on their SO's, phone sex, etc...

Radio frequencies are public domain in Canada. Cell phones use radio.

Any cell phone conversation that you have is in the public domain. Any idiot with the right equipment can listen in.

And if you think the police need a warrant to listen into your cell phone calls, you are mistaken. Cell phones are radio's and therefore can be monitored legally.

Feel better?
The frequency spectrum is not public domain. CRTC doles out what frequencies people can legally use otherwise it is prohibited under the Radio Communications Act or whatever the current Act is called.

public domain has legal implications which cell phone conversations are not part of the public domain. They are not secure but neither are phone liines either, just easier to listen in on. As you put it Cell phones are radios and can be monitored legally which is FALSE. It is illegeal to listen in a phone conversation whether it be cell or land line phones without consent of one of the parties or by a warrant. check the criminal code.

Cops can listen in, as can anyone. Cops need reasonable and probable grounds to get the warrant to legally listen in and use that evidence in court otherwise any illegally obtained evidence is inadmissible in a court of law.

I agree. I recently went to a spy shop to purchase a hidden-camera to put in my apartment (I suspect that the landlord or maintenance people are accessing it when I'm not around- bastards). Anyhow, the owner told me that I shouldn't get the camera that records sound unless I'm in the apartment and interacting with the person on camera (which is the opposite of what I'm trying to do). Apparently one or more involved person must be aware that they are being recorded in the conversation (if the people I'm secretly taping actually speak) OR as joebear pointed out: It's illegal. You can actually get in trouble...weird but c'est la vie.

Yeah I have a PRO34 scanner I bought back in the 1980's when all the calls were on the old analog band. The scanner was sold with the 859 -870 MHz band blocked out to make it legal however if you opened up the scanner and cut one wire it would then scan all cell phone calls. It was like you had tapped into a telephone exchange. There were 1000's of call to listen too. I did hear just about everything including famous people. Now a day’s most everything’s on the digital band and the old Radio Shack scanners can't pick up... however there is a scanner from Asia that will decode the digital calls from what I heard so if someone really wants to listen in they just might be.

What kind did you buy?
Is it wireless?
If it is a wireless camera... then you have another part or receiver at you tv and anyone else in range with the same receiver or one that can tune to the same frequency then yes they might be watching you too.

Cell phones are so not secure and neither are landlines ESPECIALLY if you're on a cordless
Now that you mentioned it..... Yes cordless were the best to listen in on, better then cell phones, since it was someone close by like the next door neighbors, people you knew!. Back in the 80’s when I got my scanner I became seriously hooked on listening in of cordless calls in my old apartment building… so hooked I even had headphones in the shower! Listening in on calls in that building was better then Melrose Place! To this day I never talk on a cordless anything private!!!!!

Oh yeah lets not forget about baby monitors that just about everyone’s using these days. Just scan 49.00MHz to 49.99MHz and you will pick them up.... man talk about bugging your whole home and not even really knowing..... those Fisher Price monitors put out a good strong signal that a scanner can pick up way down the road... not only that I could pin point the home where the signal was coming from. Baby Monitors are one of the worst invasion of privacy!

It is wireless and I didn't end up buying it- yet.

Most wireless cameras like the X10 line use the 2.4GHz band.... and so does alot of other wireless video devices like the wireless video extenders. If someone was using any of these other devices thats using the same 2.4GHz frequency they might just be picking up your camera too... best to avoid wireless devices at all costs if you really want to be sure your safe.

Illegal or not, I'd sure as hell want to know if someone was accessing my apartment when I wasn't around. I had it happen before with a dodgy
perverted superintendent. I had my suspicions, and I caught him in the act. I wouldn't necessarily say my retaliation was legal either, but c'est la vie.

Go spy girl go!

What else can I do? I have a strong suspicion that these creeps are going into my apartment. Nothing is missing, that I know of- but they seem like real weirdo's and that worries me. Ew. I live in an apartment building, not a house.
V. why dont you just buy a second lock. Surely your landlord wont mind you installing another lock
