I don't listen to Howard any more because it wasn't worth listening through the weeks of crap to get one good show or bit. The routine is old but unfortunately there is a large audience in the US that just eats up what he has to say. The FCC is going to pay much closer attention to everyone now and will make an example of someone so that broadcasters don't get complacent and think that the Janet incident or stunts like it will be tollerated.

just under the radar
Howard had a much edgier quality to him when he played the married/trapped man surrounded by beview of young lovelys who were so close, but unattainable.

Howard wants to close his contract out and move on to satelite.

Fact is Howard Stern is his Howard stern's biggest fan.

Man... talk about FREEDOM OF SPEECH....
What does Freedom of Speech have to do with this subject?

1) He is broadcasting on public airwaves which have been licensed to the channels he his heard on. Those licenses come with rules and regulations. Freedom of speech does not guarantee access to the public airwaves.

2) He does not own the stations that broadcast his program - he is an employee paid to provide entertainment. Freedom of speech does not guarantee an employee the right to use his employer's resources to say whatever he wants.

3) As I've (painfully) tried to explain to Sheiky on numerous occasions, there is a difference between the freedom to say something, and the freedom from any consequences or criticism of such statements. Don't trivialize something as important as Freedom of Speech with nonsense like this.

ah..............

the sad thing is that it was Howard's guest who was talking on air used the offensive remarks! Not Stern himself!

Just wondering, but if I typed "from a male's point of view, you should be raped", would putting lol after my comment make it okay?

his sexist attitude towards women makes me ill....sad part is some women go along with him...makes it even worse in my books...
Yes, because you know better than those other women what's good for them.

Funny, that's often the same type of rationalization used to stigmatize and insult sex workers.

A man who would put down a women's looks etc has no respect
Respect for what?

For women?

Please explain.

damn 5 minutes alone with him would a nice thought....smiling
Why? Because he's an asshole? What's with all the threats?

I stopped listening to Q after they dumped Howard. It wasn't so much that they dumped Howard, it's that they replaced him with a right-wing, frat boy imbacile with half his intelligence.

I always thought Stern confused being obnoxious with being funny. He reminds me of a fifth grader that just figured out there was such a thing as sex. Or maybe today it's third graders.

way out in left field
Whew, lots of responses to this thread, good to see some of us realize what is happening in the US. As a Stern fan, I too find him funny and boring at times, but then, everyone providing entertainment is, EVERYONE. Sometimes musicians have rockin' nights, sometimes they produce a so so album etc.

Annalee: The only way the women who go on his show are degraded is if he or someone else forced or coerced them to be there. Most of them go for the exposure for their careers, some go for a laugh, some to promote a product. The problem (IMHO) you have with stern is that he calls em as he sees em! If some tubbo goes on their thinking she's all that, he says HON, you're NO way in any shape or form, playboy material. Is that degrading? Hell no, that's the truth.

You also have to admit that there are many women that go on there who he has helped. There were a few women a while back who had physical deformaties that he sent to a surgeon to correct.

Annalee, I read most of your posts and you seem like an intelligent woman, but I find it so hard to believe that you think the women who go on the show is degrading yet you sleep with men for money? I would say that most of the women who go on his show would find what YOU do degrading.....

Freedom of SPeech: The 1st amendment (even in Canada) allows anyone to say anything about any subject as long as it doesn't promote hate, or violence. NOTHING stern has said in my recollection even comes close. As for following the FCC rules: He has a permanant on staff censor who bleeps everything that does not abide by the FCC rules. The problem here is the rules have been changed (due to that wingnut Jackson) yet they haven't really, not officially anyways. Now everyone is on the high horse about censorship and morality yet they are circumventing the very process that makes the US a free country. They haven't published any new rules, they haven't drafted any amendments to those rules and the FCC is not an elected body.

Taking Stern off the air: THere is an old saying that goes something like this: They came for the blacks who lived on my street and we did nothing, they came for the jews, we did nothing, they came for the hispanics, middle eastern, italian polish greek and we did nothing. Now they are coming for me and there's no one left. When the government begins to dictate what we can or cannot see/hear/learn/watch then we are in for a rough future. Does anyone remember a man named Josef Stalin or all the other dictators? What about the items that 60 minutes reports on? Many are anti-government, take them off the air too, what about news? let's censor that as well......If this keeps up the US may end up having to change their slogan to: Land of the oppressed and home of the disenchanted...because they won't be free anymore.....

BTW Shake: when a person is given a tv or radio show what they put on the show is governed by the rules set forth by the FCC and reviewed by the managers of the tv or radio stations. They control what their employees do by editing the segments, altering the content etc. By making money and allowing an employee access to their equipment they are CONDONING and ENCOURAGING his or her actions else they would remove him or her.

One other thing: I believe at last count stern had 18 million listeners... that is almost as much as the population of Canada....makes you wonder eh?

I am a huge Howard fan... and I think the news commentary is always excellent. Sometimes it hits the gutter... but it is a show made for adults. There is noone who can touch him on the airwaves...

As for freedom of speech, I think it is a freedom of speech issue as ClearChannel dominates. They own everything (with govt blessing). Radio is dead... homogenized and neutered... enjoy Stern while you can because all that will be left when he is gone are cookie cutter morning zoos.

As for a previous poster, I too preferred Stern as the married tortured man as opposed to the primping old millionaire with the trophy girlfriend...

Can someone tell me what has been the downside to having Howard Stern on the radio all these years? How has your life been affected by it, or how has society decayed by his direct presence. And I would prefer if you could make direct references please.

That's right! For those of you with strong opions of him you probably listen. If you don't like him don't listen. And if you find the show redundant with all the commercials and other shit he does, than turn the dial. There are plenty of people who do listen and would like to listen. The vast majority.

So unless you can show me something unlawful being done here, than I think if the gov't starts getting deeper into regulating media including the Internet, will we have a forum to post in or if there is would we feel comfortable about discussing the things we do here.

BTW I don't listen to Howard Stern
