Some of you guys really are dumb?
You guys don't know the difference between a sikh and a muslim.
These groups don't get along and you whities want to put them in the same category. I guess Italians and Russians are the same because they are both white.
Pro - first off; please learn proper English before you talk about people being insensitive to others.

No one here has said Muslim = Sikh. They are both religions foreign to the general population of Canada; and they tend to be the most vocal groups in insisting that "rights" they have "at home" should be granted to them here; and tend to pull out Human Rights complaints when they get their own way.

I work with many Muslims, and some Sikhs - my experience with them is generally positive; and I try to accomodate their needs (breaks and room to pray, certain dress requirements, etc) as best I can. But - when it comes to things like safety (hard hats, harness, etc) - it's my way or the highway - because it someone get's hit in the melon, or falls; the labour commission frys my ass, not theirs. It's not about religion, it's about THE LAW.

If I goto India, is it right for me to demand them to serve me a steak, or speak in English? No - because that's not the country's culture or way, and = I WENT THERE = so it's on me to observe local laws and cultural standards, not on them to change to suit my wants and desires.

What happened to the indentity of a country? The strength of a Nation?

If Canada was so much better then where someone came from, that they moved here, why do they want to change Canada? Accept it, Love it, or go the f^ck home!

The Real England still does, if only we could flush all the detritus back to where it bubbled from. Farkin libs.
Poor Lancs! Your world is changing. In 75 to 100 years, Europe will be a Muslim enclave and the king of England will probably be named Mohammed. The US will likely be a bilingual state, Spanish and English, and the world's only superpower will be China. British Columbia will be mostly Chinese-speaking and the mayor of Toronto will be Vietnamese. But don't worry Lancs, some traditions will likely endure: Jane-Finch will still have a gun problem and the Leafs will still not have won another Stanley Cup. :D

I myself have had personal and professional relationships with middle eastern people and they are no better or worse than the rest of us but the problem with Canada is they are getting too generous with immigration quotas and it has to come to a point that we will have to say no more until we catch up with acceptable employment quotas.

I must agree. I am sick of being called a "racist" because I want my country to have an identity. Canada is slowly being divided up to the point where we are a weak nation. I am not war-monger, or a racist, or even a Conservative (necessarily). I love my country and encourage immigration. But we have laws and a manner in which we do things. Yet every time I put on the news, someone is changing it to honour the sensibilities of another culture. What about OUR culture??? I am tired of being told I have to adapt to the new people making my home theirs. If you invited someone to stay in your home would you allow them to put your dog outside, move all the furniture around, paint the place and tell your neighbours they could only visit during daylight hours? We are a peaceful and sadly, apathetic... and we're being taken advantage of.
Boo fucking hoo. The only "culture" you seem to have is feeling sorry for yourself.

If there was any backbone to Canadian culture, we wouldn't have the liberal laws we do.

Here's a bit of consolation: in just a hundred years, you and I and just about everyone now living will be dead. In the grave, there are no friends, no enemies, and no regrets.

Heretofore it has been the custom that those who move to a new country although they may be proud of their ancestry and teach their children the old language, become assimilated into the larger culture historical examples are Scots who emigrated to Russia and their descendants became throughly Russified: Barclay de Tolly, Greig, Elphinstone, Balmain etc. . . the only Scottish thing left was the Surname and the “Y” chromosome marker.

Now we say oh it would be just horrible to state that you need to assimilate.

Generally pretty good actually. I do make a few typos now and then just to give you something to dwell on.

PS. You can NEVER be too rich.

Holy crap!!!! I didn't realize so many people were anti-immigrant. What an niave little place my mind is.

I for one am very pleased with living in such a multicultural city. There is so much culture, food, festivals and recreation activities that there is no place I would rather be. Unfortunately, one of the main problems that I see, is that many people are unable to drop their biases, whether from the countries from which they came, or here at home.

Different cultures have different ways of doing things, and that is neither right nor wrong, it is just the way it is.

Just the way I see it folks.

I think there is a large difference between multiethnicity and feeling that you should be exempted from the laws of larger society. Teaching your child your native or ancestral language and feeling that you should be provided services in that language rather than learning English or French. Feeling that it's ok if other religions are subject to ridicule, but making death threats when cartoons are published about your religion.
