Forgot to say, try to be patient about the weight. I lost 70 lbs., and remember well how frustrating it is when it just plateaus sometimes...keep going, it will come off.

Wise words. I agree.

Loosing wieght, getting fit, building lean (muscle) mass etc. Is a science meaning it requires know how. No matter what body type or genetics you have you goals can be met. It maybe easir for others but unfortuntely we are not them. Achieving fitness goals does not come overnight...but they will come. Patienct, Persistence, discipline and wisdom will do it.
Eat right, work out, be consistent.
Good luck bro, it is very encouraging and inspirational.

Wow!!!...70 lbs...good for you SG... what made you decide to do this?
I was fat. It was either lose weight, or buy bigger clothes than I ever had before.

I stopped eating until I was full, and started eating till I wasn't hungry. You can fit a lot of food in between those places.

Downside....5 years later, my stomach has shrunk to the point where I can't eat a lot at one time even if I want to. It is possible, and incredibly frustrating, to be simultaneously hungry and full.

I know what you mean about trying to lose the last 15-20 pounds.
I injured a disc in my back and while I waited for surgery I gained some weight and ended up going to 231pnds, I was able to burn off about 16 pnds after surgery through cardio. I got stuck at this point and I knew that I would have to build lean mucsle in order to help me with the rest and I was worried about injuring my back so I hired a trainer. It's not cheap, but I know it's my best option to help me lose the last few pounds and strengthen my back and core!
It's going to take time and healthy eating, I'm a year away from 40 and my goal is to by under 200 when I celebrate!

I want to thank you all for the instructive feedback.

I'm satisfied with the progress I've made even though my doctor isn't impressed. To answer some of the questions; lunges and squats are the back-bone of my lower body program. The pain I feel in my shoulder blades isn't from the motion of doing squats, it's from the downward pressure of the barbell on my shoulders and it doesn't flare until I go to bed. I've been trying to alleviate this by working with a rowing machine. I have rheumatoid arthritis from years of wear and tear, had I been able to adjust to earning a living from an office I may not have some of these problems. Some people can work with a roof over their heads, I find it claustrophobic.

As for my doctor she has been very good to me. Unlike the old prick she replaced who ran his practice like a cattle call. She's young super smart and hasn't been made cynical by age. 1 1/2 years ago she threatened to have my driver's license revoked, it was her way of administering tough love and it achieved the desired effect. I haven't been this healthy in a very long time, still there is room for improvement. I intend to deliver on the six-pack abs.

Revoke your drivers license? For being overweight? The "Fat Police" have arrived in Canada. Do you have any personal freedom left up there? The overweight are an easy target...we are easy to hit and we're too out of shape to fight back.

lol

The possible loss of my driver's license had nothing to do with my weight. It was an issue I refused to deal with at the time, that I'd rather not discuss in an open forum. I was letting the problem get out of control so she gave me an ego enema.

You need to burn more calories than you take in. From what I have read, you probably burn about 3000 calories a day. Get down to eating 2000 calories/day. To lose 1 lb. you need to burn off 3000 calories. By only taking in 2000 cal and burning 3000 you burn off 1000/day. 7 x 1000 equals 7000/week or about 2 lbs per week. And eat things you like and are good for you. You have to get into changing your lifestyle and not some bullshit fad diet that you hate.

Keep track of the calories. Don't just guess or you will go nowhere. I eat 4-5 meals a day at 4-500 calories. I weigh what I did in High School. I have put on 20-30 lbs in the past, but when I need to lose it, I watch my calories and get active (exercise). Good luck.

Here's what the Mayo Clinic says:

Because 3,500 calories equals about 1 pound (0.45 kilogram) of fat, you need to burn 3,500 calories more than you take in to lose 1 pound. So if you cut 500 calories from your typical diet each day, you'd lose about 1 pound a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 calories).

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/calories/WT00011

I bust my ass riding my bike 15 miles and only burn about 800 calories. My point being, you need to exercise, but can really lose weight by just eating less calories.

Can you hula hoop? Most guys can't...but if you can, it works all your abs at once. You can get an adult-size one online, the heavier ones are easier than lighter (mine is 3lbs.). I change direction every three minutes to avoid lower-back issues. And if you do it fast enough, it turns into cardio.

I'm also a big fan of crunches.
You hit the nail on the head NotSoSillyGirl.

I've never done hula, I did something almost similar with speed walking. Not the casual variety walk, the Ministry of Silly Walks kind that you see at the Summer Olympics. As cardio it's much more efficient than running and far easier on the knees. Hopefully, sometime in the future, when I see my doctor I'll look like this:

That is a pic of actor/author Stephen Lang from his Broadway play Glory. Most people know him as Colonel Quarich in Avatar, he is Ahnold with extreme talent. I was asked if his musculature was CGI enhanced, I told them that what you saw is the real deal. I've seen him perform on stage, in Avatar he looked smaller. He's almost 60 and is fitter than the vast majority of men at 30.

I've been asked how my body reshaping is going so here's the latest update.

I took my family to Mother's Day brunch at a swanky Woodbridge Banquet Hall. This was going to be my prerequisite diet cheat day. The buffet selection was extensive, perfectly cooked and delicious - and yet I had no appetite for carbs. Apart from the lentils I had with roast beef, I gave all the other starchy foods a pass.

Presently I'm 215lbs, down from 225lbs and I have hired a personal trainer to help me achieve my goals. I learned quickly that my routine was not what it could be; I was lifting too much weight with not enough repetition. I learned that for maximum results you should lift for fifteen reps in one set; three set with forty five reps yields the best results. I lowered my weight count and increased the reps, I'm beginning to see actual definition in my muscles.

I also learned that my core routine was crap. I included no exercises for my lower back; consequently it was becoming progressively stiffer after shoulder presses. My personal trainer put me through a battery of lower back exercises (she kicked my ass) that put me through excruciating pain. At one point I was so overcome that I nearly went off like Junior Soprano falling in the shower. She asked me if I hated her; it was a moot point since I now have complete freedom of movement. I learned the difference between bicep curls and hammers; the former works the forearm as well as the bicep, the later isolates the biceps, since my forearms are already strong I get more benefit by doing hammers.

Getting rid of the initial ten pounds was easy but getting to 200lbs will be difficult. I will require far more cardio work than I've allotted time for. If anyone knows of rowing clubs that are accepting new members please let me know.

Again, thank you for all the support I've gotten.

Out of gratitude I'm posting a sexy scene from Chloe (why wasn't it ten seconds longer). Enjoy.

Although exercise is very important, your food is more important. You can workout 30 minutes on the bike, burn 250 calories but 2 three bites of some foods will kill the 250 calories.

Best way is to reduce your carbs, reduce your calories. Drinkinging beer? Not good , Lots of carbs.

When I did low carb diet my colesterol went down. Takes a deficit of 3500 calories a week to lose a pound.

This first week I dropped 6 lbs, propably water but still 6lbs.

I was trying to figure something out this morning, and I'm hoping maybe someone out there can help.

How many crunches would equal a minute of hulahoop?

The hoop weighs 3 lbs. and is at a moderate speed. The crunches get split, 1/3 are traditional with shoulders to the mat for each one, and the rest are those little ones where shoulders stay up....not sure if that matters. Both are done in sets of 20.

Is there a way to correlate the two? Thanks for any input.

No, it's not me. It's never me. :)

congrats on the progress you've made!! well done. I know it's a tough road, I'm 5'8" , was 192lbs .... that's only a few pounds away from being obese. Today I'm at 142 ..... a little while ago I made it down to 134, but that was looking too skinny, so I brought myself back up a bit on the body fat until I can get more muscle mass built.

Anyhow, lots of good recommends on here so far, sounds like your routine will help get your results.

I used a program online to help track my calories and fitness. www.livestrong.com ... I found it really helped, especially when tracking the calories. As a bit of perspective, as some have mentioned, being at a deficit of 3500 cal will drop one pound. I lost 40lbs in 4 months by dieting hard, while swimming (good for my back) .... that was basically eating just over 1000 cal a day for 4 months. Later, I had a stretch of time where I only had access to the treadmill in a hotel gym. In 6 weeks of running every other day, I burned 10500 cal ... so that's 3 pounds in 6 weeks! So, my point is, while exercise is important, so is managing calories, and cutting your calories will yield quicker results than just hitting the cardio hard.
Best of luck!
