I hate the History Channel

I think you're missing the point. My post wasn't about "Oh my god there's this channel that I don't like what am I going to do....."

It was merely me complaining about what the channel passes off as history.

Other people seemed to understand and added their comments with regards to other channels that do the same thing.

IF those are the only comments you have to make practice what you preach and select another thread.

and my original post indicated you can exercise your right to change the channel.

There ya go now you understand where I'm coming from. Anyways, even though it was on the wrong channel I ended up watching Fargo...... just in case anyone was concerned that I was stuck on the history channel.

Poker just shouldn't be televised. Card games just aren't very interesting to watch.

I can't stand watching golf but I like to play it. Some games/sports are fun to participate but awful to watch (baseball is another good example of fun to play boring to watch). Imagine if TV didn't edit down fishing trips.

Actually the worst stuff on the sports channels are the Strongman stuff. I can sit through poker, I can sit through fishing, but that Strongman shit is just pointless. LOL

What this channel passes off as history is sick. Today they're showing Red Dawn (a movie about Russians landing and taking over small town america).

In the past this channel has shown a ton of westerns as well sorry but the Wild Bunch hardly passes for history.

Red Dawn has a cult following.. it is soo bad that some pppl love it. It certainly is not history.

The CRTC does not enforce the terms of license of these companies. If you are really upset, write them a letter. Nothing big will happen but the History Channel will have to respond to you.

I agree -- I was watching "Red Dawn" on the History Channel between appointments today, and I thought the same thing! Station identifiers kept insisting "History on film" but this wasn't history, not in the purest sense of the word. After that, "Top Gun" came on -- again, pure fiction.

Considering all the tinkering with media and "news" these days, I think it serves to at least make it very clear what is fictional and what is fact.

I grant you that the History Channel does show some non historical movies, but overall it is one of my favourite specialty channels. Over the weekend the had a WWI weekend of programming, which I thought was very good - both documentaries and movies.

The channel that I am most disappointed in is the Scream network. When I heard there was a channel dedicated to horror movies, I though it was a great idea and I would be willing to pay extra to get it. However, when I had a free preview of it after buying a cable box, I was very disappointed.

They show a lot of movies that are not horror movies such as Die Hard??? and other action movies. A lot of the horror movies they do show are crap. Therefore, I have decided to not pay extra for it.

Movies based on actual historical figures or events rather than complete fiction like top gun, jag, red dawn. I can't remember which western they showed a few years ago it was either the wild bunch or the magnificent seven either way pure fiction.

Scream also shows thrillers but Die HArd and Fargo don't even fall under that category IMO.

The main point of this thread is relevant. We were promised more intellectual programing from the usual sitcoms (which I like 20% of the time), reality shows (hate) & sports (like 80% - not golf/curling/fishing). Instead these networks are contributing to the further "dumbing down" of North America with the shows mentioned. I too was disappointed with airing Red Dawn on a Canadian national holiday - is there no Canadian historical movie available? The decline of A&E & Discovery are truly disappointing. As a student of military history, I had also hoped the Military Channel would be more than "The US Military Channel".

Can someone please explain the presence of poker & CityLine on SexTV?!!! - if ever a network had ample opportunity to maintain ratings, this would be the one!!!!

How can you hate Red Dawn? They also had Top Gun and Young Guns on. Even most "real" history movies are fiction to a significant respect, even if they did take place in more correct setting. 12 O'clock High, one of their regular off hours features, and Tour of Duty aren't far from Hogans Heroes, except not meant to be funny. All history movies are part fiction. I guess it's all a matter of how much fiction you are willing to accept.

I'm annoyed that the Somme doc on now was already shown on the weekend (it is pretty good though).

And if you want to learn science from the TV, then science isn't your problem.

I saw that. Holy christ, that was not a battle, that was a meat grinder.

I can't imagine what that would have been like. Something like a million men were killed in total.

The British guns fired off almost 2 million rounds over 8 days and could be heard as far away as in London.

There used to be some pretty good stuff on PBS like Vista and Nova which were pretty educational and sound in its science.

For kids there used to be stuff like Mr. Wizard.

And on CBC we still have the Nature of Things.

These are just video versions of stuff like Discover Mag and Popular Science.

I think there's nothing wrong with people trying to learn from TV. I think a decrease in that opportunity is upsetting. I think in today's day and age people should be more science literate than ever. How else are people supposed to make informed decisions about products they buy/use or decisions when it comes to voting on certain issues related to science such as ecology/the environment.

I agree that all movies have varying degrees of fiction in them and don't consider movies based on historical events/people as fact. I fogot about Tour of Duty and yes that's pretty much fiction with small slivers of truth.

Maybe the best solution for the history channel would be to focus on documentaries but I know that movies are there for the ratings.
