Gotta eat at ACME Oyster house (off bourbon near Canal St), sit at the bar and just go for it - Fantasitc joint. Also line up and get in to see the Original New Orleans Jazz band (in a dump of a little hall but the real deal - ancient black guys playing the original blues). And a Hurricane at O'Brians of course. If you like to look and shop (or just look), Royal Street (two down from Bourbon) is cool. And of course Cafe le Monde (near the river at the end of Decatur) for morning coffee and Beigniets (very very good donuts). Please please do not wander off Bourbon street at night - it is very very rough just a block away.

You'll have an amazing time

Experiences that I remember on Bourbon street. Be out for when they are tossing/handing out the necklaces.
Check it out during the day to see the difference.
Check it out during the night to see the parties. Enjoy your drinks on the street as your walking... the entire French quarter alcohol is allowed (or is it just bourbon street?)
the sex shows were lame, but admission gets you a free drink.
If your up, you can see the bars starting to empty at 8am :)
drinking is 24/7 there. a lot of bars close but they are open all night long and close in the AM to clean up.
I was there before Katrina but the one thing that really sits in my mind is how the city smelled like garbage. not enough down time to clean the place up.
