Is this the speech that all the fuss has been made about? If so, I don’t really see the big deal.

I met Peter MacKay along with my local candidate Peter Conroy one morning last week as I was trying to enter the Woodbine subway station. They were canvassing commuters with pamphlets, cups of green tea, nervous smiles and handshakes all round. Problem with MacKay was he wavered when I looked him in the eye while shaking his hand. I'm just slightly under 6' tall and I don't have a linebacker build or a visegrip handshake. I'm really very average but comfortable with the ritual of meeting influential people and shaking hands. He should be really good at it with all his political exposure etc. but he exudes a trace of apology and mild discomfort and he lacks the ability to make solid eye and hand contact at the right time. Nothing terminal but not inspiring either...
I admit I felt sorry for Mackay after Belinda dumped him and he went back to his fathers farm and cried in front of the cameras...but lets not forget that the only reason he became leader of the P.C's in the first place was due to fraud. He's a back stabber and a liar. In order to secure enough support to become leader of the Progressive Conservatives, he assured his main rival and signed a letter drafted by Joe Clark, that if elected leader of the P.C's he would not join with the Reform Party. So, in the end he wiped his ass with the letter he signed and stabbed all his supporters in the back.

He is a backstabber. And soon to be our deputy prime minister.

It sound too much like one of Conrad Black's speeches, putting down Canada.

I thought when Harper took out an add in the US saying how he would have joined the US in Iraq - I felt this was the action of a traitor and he should have been sent packing along with Ernie Eves and the rest of the bunch

Actually you are wrong!!!

McKay put his country ahead of politics, the only way the Liberals would have ever been beat is by the two parties merging together.

Joe Clark was a great man, but he was a Liberal, and during the last election he proved that. I even remember hearing a tape of Brian Mulroney talking about Joe Clark being too left. Being too left for Mulroney is pretty far left if you ask me.

McKay put the Pricipals of this country before the personalities and ego's of a party. That is a sign of a good leader. Many right wing people wanted that merge only the Progessive's didn't. The Progressives are a small minority.

If MacKay didn't agree to the merger, we'd be in the middle of another Liberal majority right now.

Good point, Fritz...

It was a necessary action to counter the left. Did it cost him some credibility? I'm sure it did. But there's no way they'd be on the brink today without making up. They were on the same team before. Now let's get back to discussing the Liberal lies that cost us taxpayers big bucks shall we?

critizing bad policies like an overly generous EI system is not putting down Canada. You remind me of a certain American on this board who accuses anyone who criticizes U.S. policy of being anti-American

I don’t think he put out an advertisement. Regardless, you must also hate Martin for saying the same thing. You and certain American posters on this board have a lot in common if you think that criticizing government policy is treason.

latest poll shows conservatives at 42%; Liberals at 24%; NDP at 17% and I won't bother with the rest

do I smell a majority????
I smell a rogue poll. I wish it were true but it seems out of wack with all other polls. I still think we are looking at a 8-10% lead and a minority.
