Hey , there seems to be alot of smart people here so: if I try to watch my favorite show Heros on NBC.com I am locked out since Canada is not in the right region. The same applies for MTV (america) music videos on various sites etc.
In the past, I tricked the computer by changing my location via changing regional settings but this no longer works. Is there a way to have such sites think you are in the correct country so you can watch or use them? What is the procedure.

ON a related issue; goole does the same thing. When you type google.com it switches from google.COM to google.ca so we only get the Canadian version of our site. There a very complicated procedure to over-ride this; but i do like to get the TRUE google instead of our goverment controlled google we get in Canada. Terb is all ready banned in far to many places, its only a matter of time . . . anyway if anyone knows the "hacks" to solve these or similar problems thanks in advance.

PS -any preakers still around?

Have you tried using the available proxy servers to bounce your request from servers lying in US or the appropriate country? I have'nt tried but this seems to be an interesting problem. Gotta research :)

Actually, it is the USA side that is preventing access. Nice try, though.

it has nothing to do with governments...it depends on the corporations themselves.
That just seems odd.

Companies limit worldwide access to reduce server loads (especially when video content is offered that isn't available elsewhere in the world, as is the case with most TV shows). It's a simple technology issue most of the time: the server would explode if they didn't do it. ;)

and customizing content to target audience.

Airline sites commonly do this. It's a hassle to book flights outside of your home country. Air France & KLM are such pain in the ass.

Hmm, an associate download all episodes of Heros, not sure from where.

The google thing I'll leave alone. I believe they customize the search engine for the country you are logging in from to make the search more specific. It doesn't work as anyone can put Canada or Toronto in their keywords.

As for TV downloads. No you will not be able to view the shows from Canada on the ABC, NBC, CBS or FOX websites. Why? Those shows have been sold to Canadian broadcasters 99% of the time. The Canadian broadcasters own the rights in Canada for that show.

If you were to watch the US feed off the internet you would see the whole show with commercials. The US agencies repping the companies who advertise have not paid for usage in Canada. Hence the second reason for the blackout. If the commercial plays here even on the internet usage fees apply to the actors etc.

So it comes down to how the producers have licensed the show.

No we won't see the US feeds here in Canada from the originating network sites. It's about the broadcast license and the US commercials.

Why the Canadian broadcasters are not running the programs en masse is due to usage fees for actors. The internet is a new territory and there are no specific rates that apply to viewing. Thats what the ACTRA strike was all about. They have reached a quasi agreement but it's not yet completely finalized. When CTV puts it on their website they are paying a premium for you to see it that way. Global so far has not done that.

CBC..well ahh..never mind.

Hope that explains some of the reasons.

I know this is also the case for the MLB playoffs, which you can watch on mlb.com for a nominal fee. Because Sportsnet owns the rights in Canada, mlb.com blacks out Canadians (even though they paid the $20). Only a few games in the first round get through because they happen to overlap and Sportsnet can't air them.

The VPN idea would perhaps work, I'm going to try that next time I have this problem.

software suggestions etc.

I am aware of the reasons, but the review of some of the was nicely put. The google thing is more serious than just localized searches; the state controls what we can and can not search for - in Canada its the fear of the Homolka case problem happening again (there was a nation wide black out about the case - which had cable channels blocking news channels about it, but the internet at the time let you read anything about the case you wished - and how the cops screwed it up, another matter) and with the filter tech that was devolped for China its now hard to get anything the gov doesnt want you to see - but the draconian tech used in China has yet to go here and as of 12 months ago it was fairly easy to override the location and get USA or who evers internet televsion or otherwise - you used to be able to ask your provider how to do it, but now they don't tell you (for reasons already stated in the thread). Unfortunely my computer been reformated back to its non watch and see anything settings and I have no clue how to get i back. It possible that things have changed but its been my experience in the past that things like this don't change hardware wise but rather getting to the info get harder (for example, you can still clone your cell phone as of last year, but the service providres have been closed down, and you can still get a scanner legally to listen to cells and such but they legally can't be manufactered to do so anymore in Canada but you can legally own one that has the capablity -but you have to modify one yourself {{and those laws came about because some candian politican had a cell phone convesation taped when he was hiring an escort - and a few weeks later the law was changed - which shows you that the years it takes them to do important legistlation is basically a Tony Snowjob}} -anyway, does anyone know the easy way to do this - I know someone knows, I became aware of the possiblity years ago from this board -anyway maybe someone knows maybe not. We shall see. Where are all the phreakers when you need them lol.

just download the show via a torrent tracking site like demonoid.com i download and watch all my tv that way. its so much nicer with no commercials.

But if you really must insist on watching on the american website, go through a proxy server or two that his hosted in the states
