I've used an ionic air cleaner, but stopped when i read that they might be hazardous to your health. Apparently they produce an unacceptable level of ozone in the room, plus they really don't work that well. :(

I just bought 2 of them, one for work and one for home. I hope they are not harmful to my health, as I was going for the opposite effect obviously. I purchased the xJ-2100 silent and filterless IONIC AIR PURIFIER for $119.00. Ive found it to be excellent. I bought it at AROURA appliances on Bloor st about 2 blocks west of Bathurst. They also had another for $79.99, they use this in there store and it always smells fresh.

We bought a few XJ-2000 air cleaners a few years back, and we're very happy with them. I'd like to buy a few more.

I have an unusually sensitive nose, and I really notice the difference when I come in from an outcall. We have four dogs and are avid cooks -- lots of garlic, etc. I am convinced it helps.

I think there is a health risk with ozone generators (which these units are not in purpose, but do generate a small amount of ozone), but the amount of ozone generated by these devices (while detectable by odor when close up) is not anywhere near enough to cause harm. The don't generate any more ozone than my monitors or TVs.

We find them particularly effective in combatting cooking and pet odors. Also, Julia is a smoker, and we didn't have the heart to throw her out to smoke in the cold over the winter months -- we feel that these air purifiers helped rid the air of tobacco odors when she smoked indoors this winter.

I'm not sure how much they help our allergies, as we only have to open the window once for a few minutes to complete flood our living space with pollen and pollution.

I say go for it. I have one in my massage room, family room and kitchen, and I'm hoping to buy units eventually for every room in my home. It's well worth it.

Actually, I thought the title of this thread was iRonic air filters.....then realized my mistake.....but then again, it IS ironic that you purchase something to clear the air to make it more healthy then find out it might not be after all.......

Ionizing air cleaners get zapped

Ionizing air cleaners get zapped
By Elizabeth Weise, USA TODAY
Popular and expensive ionizing air cleaners — a staple of late-night infomercials — could expose users to lung-damaging levels of ozone, and they do a poor job of actually cleaning the air, according to a study in the May issue of Consumer Reports.

I am exploring since want to get rid of dust more than any allergy... I am not good at cleaning !

Frankly, I think the health risks are exaggerated -- probably by those with a vested interest in selling more expensive "hepe" filters.

Ours work well, and I wouldn't trade them. We haven't noticed any health risks.

I should note too that this is the same technology used in major industries, to extract pollution from smoke stacks -- a major (although expensive!) factor in making many industrial smoke stacks more environmental friendly between the 1970s and now.

It's also a technology applied to many upscale home heating/cooling systems.

Rubmeister, I can only note that I own three, and I'd buy more. If they "lower the allergen count to below [my] threshold for reactions," then isn't that exactly why I'd want them in the first place?

I know that there is a lot of controversy about these units (as there is with absolutely EVERYTHING in these days of the internet, with counterclaims flying every which way), but I'm pretty quick to abandon anything I think is a dud -- and I am so impressed with my units that I would love to have at least three more. I definitely notice cooking odors and other odors lingering much longer in those rooms that don't have a unit, compared to those that do. And that's exactly what I want an air cleaner to do: freshen the air.

With respect to safety, if I'm going to get rid of these for generating ozone, then I'd better ditch my TV, monitors and a few other electrical appliances around here. As long as you're not breathing in high concentrations of ozone, you're safe enough. The whole idea behind ionic air purifiers is that negative ions don't stay negative ions very long -- they're quick to bond with positively charged particles, which is how the whole process works. If you were to flood a room with negatively charged ions, then they would start looking for places to share their spare electrons in your flesh (which is why ozone generators work and why it's dangerous for people and animals to be in closed quarters when one is running) -- but the purpose of ionic air cleaners is simply to increase the frequency of negative ions in room air, not to flood the room with them.

thanks everyone, after much thought, I still think I will get at least one to clean up the air in my house; as to the negative effects of ozone level, I had seen 2 units running in my family doctor's office, thus I guess it should be ok to use these equipments,,, anyway, thanks for all the replys!
