IP Question

I'm not an afficionado on the topic of IP addresses in any way, shape, or form. But here is my question:

Does IP address change each time you connect to the internet or is it static? The reason I ask is b/c a company is allowing the free download of its product but you need to register with the company to get an account first. Many of the company's products are available for download from file sharing programs (but not the product in question). Could the company be trying to track who is downloading thru filesharing by comparing IPs from those who register on their site with those who are downloading thru filesharing?

Or am I being paranoid?

Whether or not you have a static IP is an open question; it depends on how or which service you use to connect to the internet.

If the product is free anyways, the chances are pretty good they want people to register in order to get E-mail addresses for the purpose of promoting their stuff, to get demographic info for market research purposes, or both. In any case, they're not in a position to be getting IP addresses from filesharing services.

If you have DSL it is dynamic IP address meaning it'll change each time you connect (ah the beauty of dsl). If your on cable typically it's static.

However, if your from the states and you have cable, i've noticed sometimes the cable ip address changes as well every 2months whenever it is time to "release/renew" the ip address.

Unless you request (and pay for) a static IP, it will change whenever you disconnect and reconnect to the intraweb.

AFAIK for a regular Sympatico home account it would be a dynamic IP.

You can change your IP manually to an overseas IP.
Here's how:

Its pretty simple u have to find a another IP proxy
these sites list proxy for most countires

http://www.proxy4free.com/page1.html
http://www.samair.ru/proxy/

find one for another country

In your browser go to tools>option> and look for something where it says proxy
then change it to manual and paste the ip proxy number and the port number in the appropriate box
apply the settings and u should be good to go
go to www.whatismyip.com to check if ur ip has changed to that of the proxy ip

Surfing might slow down a bit, however.
When your done you change it back to your own IP
