You're assuming I mean geek as a derisive statement, I don't. In some ways the world is ruled by geeks, Jobs and Gates would be only two.... does anyone think Warren Buffet was cool in school?

I meant geeks (those who love to play, fiddle... use your own term) with technology will use Linux as a end user OS but it's not for anyone who wants to use technology as a simple appliance/tool.

Understand?

No need to project your inadequacy onto me... find a way to feel better about yourself some other way.

OTB
Considering how you have ridiculed WoodP for his use of Linux and the tone/inflection of your past comments, I'm ABSOLUTELY positive (not really) that you meant "geeks" in anything BUT a derisive manner.

Regardless, you should give Linux a try, after the talk about it here and a few of my "geek" friends swearing by it for awhile, it's incredibly impressive and it costs as much as you donate to the developers.
As for inadequacies, I'm not the one boasting about my possessions constantly and what I do with them.
Remember how you bragged about you getting your iPhone a day before launch, which really wasn't necessarily important to the post/thread?
Or any other time you post about your gadgets, the constant need to post the brand/model/purchase date/time.

As for "fiddling" or "playing" with technology, isn't that the appeal of anything in today's current product market?
Fiddling with apps, touching the screen, being able to send pictures from vacation spots?
...that's the WHOLE IDEA and appeal to begin with.

ie - going on your trip to Africa and sharing photos via your iPad....big whoop.

Inadequacies? yaaaa....

Calling Woodie a geek is an insult to geeks. His posts constantly show he's a jerk of the first degree, totally lacking in logic and common sense.

Most likely that is the all the 'fiddling' with technology he is capable of which makes Apple such a perfect fit....FFS...:D

That said it is probably more 'fiddling' with technology, that his sock puppet poodle Det AppleJack is even capable of.....

That was just a test.
Now seeing how well M&S&T works I will probably get a top rated ASUS netbook with a 250 GB HDD and a real keyboard, for $250 and load M$S&T on it. This way you end up having a great GPS, W7 and of course Linux will be added to have a dual boot system.

This far more efficient and practical Asus netbook setup will blow away what you Apple Rube losers got hosed for with your silly arse pricey iPuds.....

Or perhaps this Asus Netbook for $260 for the Extended battery life
Of up to 8 hours and 40 minutes to give you more time away from an outlet.

i have seen these stats .... they are true for the server market.... these are not desktop stats..
Interestingly Linux generates more money than Apple OS....

Microsoft Earns 79% of the $30 Billion Global OS Market

We all know that Windows dominates the OS market in terms of market share, but rarely do you see someone talk about the most important number in the OS wars, revenue. Today Gartner offered up its estimations on the various OS player’s, and the results put Microsoft in a dominate lead, with $8 out of every $10 spent on operating systems ending up in the companies coffers. The results, which include server products, give the Redmond based software giant a 78.6% share of the pie, with Apple scraping by on a mere 1.7 percent. When you consider that in 2010 the OS market was worth $30.4 billion, the stakes here are definitely worth pay attention to.

Some analysts have called out the report as a success for Apple, not because of the overall market share numbers, but because of growth. Apple’s OS revenue grew by 15.8% compared to Microsoft’s 8.8%. Of course you could make the argument that percentages often favor the smaller guy, but clearly they are still doing something right. Linux comes up short in the results primarily because the vast majority of users simply download the latest and greatest version every few months for free. Red Hat, a popular Linux support service did make the list, but only earned enough revenue to place fifth.(ahead of Apple)

The scientific method behind gathering these results wasn’t mentioned in Gartner’s blog post, but in general this is a pretty respected research company. I think it’s safe to say they’ve done their homework.

Hmmm. An Atom processor. If you're going to get a netbook, probably better off getting one with an AMD fusion chip.

Those stats "include server products" the survey is for overall worldwide OS revenue. Should you take time to read the Gartner report which is linked in my original quote you will see that

the fact that they mention Mac OS fast growth, should have been a clue
Linux (server) and Mac OS were the fastest-growing subsegments in the server and client OS segments, respectively, while Microsoft maintained its leading position in the overall OS market, with 78.6 percent market share.

Yup, the new amd fusion chips are quite decent.
Checked them out.
AMD fusion chips look impressive.
Who is selling them though?
I haven't found any for sale.

Got any links?

Apples and Oranges here....

Linux vs iPad is simply a measure of the number of end users running those platforms, the fact that just one of the iOS devices (iPad) beats Linux in less than a year simply highlights how small and irrelevant Linux is as an end user OS.

The other measure, revenue of OS is a better measure of the server market where Linux does quite well (and firms like Oracle and Red Hat make money).

As for buying a net-book, loading maps on it and then connecting an external GPS to it for simple GPS mapping.... qualifies for a Red Green show segment....

Yep, I keep wondering at what point are developers going to stop working on desktop Linux?

LOL!!!!!!!
About the SAME time M$ & Apple developers stop working on their OS's.....
The one thing they ALL have in common is change which is the only constant!
But you already knew that, eh.....;)

I think his point was if so few people use the desktop distros why bother with the development time on them....

LOL!
Matters little because many feel all the bleeding edge 'developmental action' is in Linux now!....
