OR did Crosby get special treatment from both the on ice officials and the league office for this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wqR17KrLKw

IMO, this sure looks like an infraction of the "Third man in rule" but of course it is up to the discretion of the referee...it sure looks like that Atlanta player was tied up pretty well before Crosby got involved. An altercation does not necessarily mean thta the gloves were dropped already but maybe that was why he only got two minutes...

As the rule reads:47.16

Third Man In - A game misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the
Referee, shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who is the first
to intervene (third man in) in an altercation already in progress except
when a match penalty is being imposed in the original altercation. This
penalty is in addition to any other penalties incurred in the same
incident.
This rule also applies to subsequent players or goalkeepers who
elect to intervene in the same or other altercations during the same
stoppage of play.

Crosby

It takes a REAL BIG MAN to beat up on a guy who has his head covered over and being held by somebody else. I have lost all respect for this kid. He had better keep his head up from now on Like to hear what Grapes has to say about it.

I liken fighting hockey players to my ex-wife. Self-important, self-indulgent twits who can't control their emotions.

There's no other sport on the planet that condones this sort of crap. Even boxers go to their corners after the bell rings.

Personally, I'd like to see all fighting banished from the game. It slows down the game and doesn't get anybody anything. As soon as the first punch is thrown, the instigator should be tossed out of the game. Off the team. Out of the league. Then the team should be fined. Then they're free to go dig a ditch and take out their infantile frustrations somewhere else.

Yes, it pisses me off.

I heard sportscasters say that he got 17 minutes of penalties.

Actually he was given 19 minutes in penalties agains Florida the other night...this was from last week against Atlanta. ESPN has his other incident.

The problem I have with your premise is the number of cheap shots that are propagated since the instigation penalty. The officials (both on ice and off ice) are incompetent... players are bigger and faster now and on top of that they no longer have any respect for each other because it is to easy to skate away after giving a cheap shot...you have more and more STARS getting taken out for extended periods of time becasue of cheap shots to the head, players leaving their feet before making contact, players being driven into the boards from behind...etc...

It used to be players enforced this...IMO what you propose would bever work, you'd just have more STARS getting injured. The officials are to imcompetant to have this responsibility.

I haven't lost 'all respect' like spankingman has and do remember a time when so-to-say class act Jarome Iginla did something very similar in fashion years ago early in his career also...

but i do agree it was cheap and lacked class. perhaps officials should have done more, but... not the first time and won't be the last...

some replies to this thread are confusing this incident with the fight with McLean in Florida...

Crosby & McLean... another cheapshot imo... and also something Jarome Iginla has done early in his career on more than one occasion before he was respected for knowing to engage...

however, the officials kinda handled this one appropriately... apparently they knew the discussion that Crosby 'warned' McLean what was about to come after the face-off... whether McLean 'heard it' or believed it was another matter.

kinda feel for Sid, though. things are not going well in pittsburgh at all. if you take Sid and Malkin out of the lineup with their respective points they'd be #30 in the league standings right now as they have absolutely no secondary help.

Not that you need my concurence but I do agree with most of what you said here. I have no problem with the way the officails handled the fight Crosby had with McClean...and to McClean's credit he didn't have problem with it.

I do think Crosby was trying to "lead" his team with this one.

The issue in the game versus Atlanta (video link in the first post) I think the on-ice guys got it wrong big time. It was clearly a 3rd man in and should have been called...

IMO the salary cap was not kind to the PENS...they had a great team last year (including great chemistry) and now they seem to have lost that chemistry. That is a shame because I love the rivalry the PENS and FLYERS have going on but I fear the Salary Cap will prevent these teams from keeping the "chemistry" together.

As soon as a team reaches that level of potential greatness the CAP will intervene...Chicago will have issues in the next year or two, and while eveyone points to Detroit as the example of the way to run a francise...most of their advantage will begin to wain as they had locked guys into long term contracts and still have that "cup persona" that players want to be part of. They are getting older and the main pieces will begin to cause CAP issues here as well.

I guess this is what the NHL wants, since the contenders will change more frequently but I hate when you build a team from the ground up and can't keep it together.

Regarding respect

I think Crosby is very frustrated by what's been happening to his team and hasn't handled it well...I write that off to youth...it's easy to forget that he is still just a kid...all be it an very talented and wealthy one but talent doesn't necessarily make you a leader. The leadership question will be answered by how he learns from the turmoil.

PENS play Atlanta again this week...it will be interesting to see what happens

and why i don't agree with nominating someone as a captain when they are only 19 and with how much nhl playoff experience??

the leadership, i think is being built like what you said- he'll learn from the good and the bad.

in the meantime i don't know what to suggest to fix the pittsburgh problem. i would think having a Rod Brind'Amour type in the dressing room could help ... us Pens fans just have to wait for Sid to mold into a Rod, Stevie Y, Joe Nieuwendyk or whichever- and hope it comes sooner rather than later...
