Is 25$/hr a good wage?

I was going to open my own business but instead I took a job at this rate until the economy picks up, works out to about 52g's a year. I consider it very average to below average, any opinions. It's in a skilled trade, it's alot lower than my last rate but that was a well paying job in a remote area, also I'm not in TO, a much smaller city.

The times are changing.

Soon we will see the end to the trade unions and the training programs they provide. As an IBEW member I am already starting to see this.

So take what you can get and make the best deal you can.

The ibew close to me always has hundreds of guys on their books, rarely any work and hard to join, alot of politics involved, everybody's waiting on the nuclear plant to start but it may not, union jobs there's always too much traveling.

I have been lucky in that I am a Communications Tech in the IBEW. But there is a movement where the electrical side is claiming the work. Ten years and they will re-establish the pros on the com side.

I practice CRAFT not a trade

yeah...kind of a tough one. In my line of work..i make high 50's base..but... i get a free car, all gas paid for (personal + business), corporate card with about $20k to blow, full benefits, stock, $20k in bonus/year. I really work about 15 hrs/week. Yes, I am in sales!!!lol!!! If its just $52k base no more...not the greatest. Hopefully, you have some more perks??

You guys kill me sometimes. The average pay in this country about $35K a year, yet there is no shortage of people in this city (and in this forum), that look down their noses at $50K.

Get real. You don't know how good you've got it.

If your working as a contract employee at $25/hr it's like working at $70-$80k full time when you factor in the write offs for the corporation.

Also factor in the benefits if you have any...

I agree, but different people have different standards, it's about half my last job and a bit of a downer.

That's why I posted, to get a feel from the members, everybody's gonna have their own view, for me at this point in my life, I'm just not thrilled about it.

I guess I'm also lucky where most times getting hired is as easy as one phone call, and often times start the next day.

you just have to consider this when negotiating your rate:

are you going to have to live paycheck-to-paycheck?

or

are you giving enough cushion for your future?..

Since i'm solely focused in IT, I put myself through university this way. I worked part-time at a company doing their IT site management. My savings went towards paying tuition, and my other savings just grew and I still managed to spend enough for gas, insurance, rent, cell phone (never was a fan of landlines), meals, internet, etc bills, any other expenses, and this was only probably 5-6 years ago. I was making around $30K part-time.

If you are single 52k a year would be alright, but with a family, mortgage, expenses, and just living I think you would have a hard time putting anything aside for a rainy day.

There is a downward spiral going on due to outsourcing. True, not everything can be outsourced, but there are only so many good paying jobs around and there are more and more people fighting for those well paying jobs.

My comment wasn't a personal snub at you or anybody in particular. It touched a nerve because it was my peak pay a few years ago, and I've been struggling since (layoffs, illnesses, family businesses, etc). Yet, people in my circles have been telling me to take what I can get (even minimum wage), while other people should "hold out". Well, that's Toronto politics for ya.

Based on what? That's a little bit of an overstatement me thinks.... there are plenty of people in this city who survive on much less. Of course, that doesn't include the "my Aston Martin needs a new wine-chiller, and my wife got a head-transplant last Christmas" set.

If you're single, you can't die in Toronto with 52K a year.

If you're mortgaging a place, its not so bad. After taxes that about 36-38K, which can easily pay for everything. Unless you're hobbying like a maniac :p

I'm expecting around 700 a week take home, not complaining, just not satisfied with my life decisions up to this point. The last few months I got fucking around on the stock market trying to make easy money and lost, set myself back years, although hopefully they come back eventually.

When it is all said and done the only investment you make that matters is the one you make in others.
