Simple solution for the whiners...

Go buy some bandwidth and start your own cellco / telco.

You don't see many doing this do you? Ever wonder why?

Or cancel your phone service. There is no law that requires you to have a telephone.

Because you'll be bidding against Rogers/Bell. Since they've amassed massive funds from years of semi-monopoly, it will cost you several million to buy a little patch of bandwidth. And where do those millions go? Ask the recipient - the government, who will probably spend it on nothing related to telecommunications. And who will ultimately pay for those millions? The consumer through high cell phone charges, which any operator will have to charge to recoup the ridiculously high up front costs.

A nice hidden tax on every cell phone user.

Years ago the CRTC forced Bell to open its wires to other telephone service providers. When are they going to force Rogers to open its cable to other TV service providers?

Here' corporate economics 101: companies are in the game to make money.

That's it.

That's the only corporate ethic there seems to be. Operate within the law when you have to, but the bottom line is the bottom line. Period.

They are not there to be your friend.

They are not there to be nice.

They provide good service and good customer service because ... wait for it ... it ensures that they make more money.

And the kicker is, that if the telcos suddenly decided to be responsible benevolent citizens, providing excellent service as a non-profit organization and strove to provide you with the best possible services, at the lowest possible cost, the very same public would scream bloody murder. Why? Because the public is heavily invested in corporate stocks.

Sure it is a minority of people who actually own Bell stocks, compared to the number of people who own Bell phones but you'd still be pissing off some people.

If you want to change how a company acts, you have to appeal to their bottom line: acting according to strategy X will cut into your profit margin, adopting strategy Y will enhance it. Do that, and any corporation will trot along behind strategy Y like an obedient little puppy.

Seems that the CRTC hasn't come up with a very good strategy Y then

How unlike a government agency to be less that 100% effective, or not quite hitting upon a strategy to accomplish what they want to do

Government bodies tend to suffer from too many guiding ethics - many of them at odds with one another: lots of internal factions and special interests.
