Is this even remotely possible?

My ex and I broke up 4 months ago.

A few days before we broke up, we had sex (no condom, mind you), but unfortunately, we had a little too much fun and thus we had an "accident". No, she was not on the pill either.

The next day her period comes in. So I think, no harm, no foul.

Imagine my surprise when she calls me up, crying and shit, and tells me that she's pregnant. With my child.

Is this even remotely possible, given the accident was the day before her period? Or is she depressed and trying to get at me so I could "go back to her"? Most of my friends believe the latter, but one of my female friends says that it could be possible that she could have her period AND be pregnant.

Anybody? Ideas?

It's definitely not supposed to happen. As you may know, the period is a house cleaning where tissue that was to support a fertilized egg is destroyed. If I had to put money on it, I'd say that yes pregnancy can occur before a period. There are a lot of weird things that can happen with pregnancy, like implantation in the abdominal cavity. If you did get her pregnant, the most likely scenario is that she didn't have her period, just a slight bleed from implantation.

Sounds as if you will have to wait 5 months to find out.

Have your lawyer get a judge to order a DNA test to establish paternity before your name can be placed on a birth certificate. That is to say a court order to establish paternity before the certificate can be submitted. Otherwise if you are not the father you could be held liable for support.

How long ago did she call you with this news? If she is 4 months pregnant, congrats! You're going to be a daddy.
What I'm curious about is what happened to her cycle in the last 3 months? Why is she just calling you now?
It is possible for a woman to experience a little bleeding if pregnant. Theoretically she could have gotten her period and then your sperm fertilized the egg ( sperm can live 5 days in the body )...that happened to me when my husband and I were trying for our second child, but, the bleeding was NOT normal menstrual bleeding..good luck to you!

The only time a woman can get pregnant is when she ovulates and an egg is released. This generally happens mid point between periods. The egg only lives for 24 hours, and there must be sperm impregnating the egg while its living. As Steph says sperm can live for 5 or so days, so having intercourse before ovulation can result in pregnancy, however sperm delivered after the egg dies and before the next period, will not result in pregnancy. Conclusion...virtually no chance you impregnated her during your last session with her.

if she is regular with her period and she knows she is due the next day, ovulation is not possible. 2 weeks but it's more safe to make it 10 days before and after menstrual period is safe. sperm lives for 72 hrs. if you release inside.

Thanks for the answers guys, I appreciate the support.

Her period is indeed regular, which happens around the 20th of each month. Our little accident happened on the 20th, her period came in on the 21st, and we broke up on the 24th. I can tell you that she did not want me to do DATY on her as at the time she knew that her period was supposed to be coming. And this period that occurred was a full-on period, she was bleeding up for several days until we broke up and I was pretty sure she was bleeding after.

Based on what you guys have told me, it is likely that she was trying to find a way to "win me back" by trying to scare me into believing that I was going to be a daddy. It is less likely that she is actually pregnant, one of our mutual friends will be paying her a visit to find out.

I'm not going to generally assume that she is not pregnant, but it is more likely that she isn't.

Again, thanks.

If she's going to have the baby, then you're going to have to wait and get a test done.

If you are the father, then, it's a good thing. You might not be thrilled about it initially, but someday you will look back and say that you can't imagine a life without that kid now.

Good Advice from Rub but I thought he sounded a little paprika.......

For the record, you don't have to wait until the child is born to determine if you're the father or not....

http://www.identigene.com/SWIMX/Products/paternitytesting1.asp

I know she's more than a little irrational right now but personally I would say something like:

Listen hon, I know this is a trying time for both of us and I want to go with you to the doc's when you go for an exam, and I will be with you all the way but just for my peace of mind, I'd like to get a paternity test done.

I know she could and probably will freak over that but if she refuses to get one done? To me that is a prime indicator that you most likely aren't the father.....because, if you are, the test will prove it 100%.....

Another reason you should go with her for the exam is if you're right there, and the doctor says: yes, it's a healthy, normal 4 month old fetus then that fits with her story....But if the doc says, hmmm it's really small, more likely a 2 month old....then there's your answer. If you're not there, she could simply tell you everything is normal.

Plus, if it is yours, and they pick it up on the ultrasound, wouldn't you want to be there for it's first picture?

BTW: for the record, if it is yours, be a man and do everything in your power to make sure that child grows up knowing it is loved, wanted, and you're proud to be his or her father.....It enrages me when I hear about these low lifes that get a girl pregnant then cause all kinds of shit and not paying support, not spending time with her before during and after it's born etc.

I was going to say what this guy did.

You can't get a woman pregnant the day before her period, there is no egg.

I have heard of women still having a couple of periods early on during pregnancy.

Did you have any other accidents prior to the last time you had intercourse?

Sorry fellas, but those of you saying it's not possible are mistaken. There are many well-documented cases of pregnancies occuring when they supposedly shouldn't have occured. Eggs can be released from the ovaries at any time during a woman's cycle. Every woman is different - it's not an exact science and women don't always ovulate just on the 14th day. However, I still think it is really unlikely that a woman would get pregnant at the start of her period but I would never say never.

Below are some links you may find interesting. I know you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet but I have read similar things in medical journals and books.

A woman can get her period while being pregnant, my mother was one of them. But the likelihood of her being pregnant with your child from that one night of sex, one day before her period - basically impossible. If the relationship was coming to an end, and she was fucking around, then she was most likely already pregnant, and knew it, so played her cards right, had sex with you, without a condom, to cover up her mistake, and make you think it is your baby. By doing this she might even believe it's yours.

The ONLY thing to do now is to INSIST that you need DNA testing (and in-utero DNA testing at that) so that you can determine very early (like now, for example!) on whether or not you have anything to do with this child. It doesn't sound like you want to get back together with this girl, so why play daddy to someone else's child with a woman you don't want to be involved with? Also, you need to cover your ass, legally. Get DNA testing.

Good luck!
