hunger games is whitewashed. in the novel Katnis has black hair and olive skinnes. they chose a white anglo blonde to portray Katnis
Most people seldom feel that they cast the person you feel they should have in the movie version of a well loved novel, that is simply known as a combination of casting and the human predicament, rather than racism.

When they cast a brunette in the Percy Jackson kids movie that was a blonde in the novels was that a whatever the reverse term for "whitewashed" might be?

list of white washed movies

The 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's has been criticized for its portrayal of the character Mr. Yunioshi, Holly's bucktoothed, stereotyped Japanese neighbor. Played by Mickey Rooney, Rooney wore makeup to change his features to a caricatured approximation of a Japanese person.

some people here in a past thread admitted to liking this racist movie

Fu Manchu

In 1929 the character Fu Manchu made his American film debut in The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu played by the Swedish-American actor Warner Oland. Oland repeated the role in 1930's The Return of Dr. Fu Manchu and 1931's Daughter of the Dragon. Oland appeared in character in the 1931 musical, Paramount on Parade where the Devil Doctor was seen to murder both Philo Vance and Sherlock Holmes.

In 1932, Boris Karloff took over the character in the film The Mask of Fu Manchu. The film's tone has long been considered racist and offensive, but that only added to its cult status alongside its humor and Grand Guignol sets and torture sequences. The film was suppressed for many years, but has since received critical re-evaluation and been released on DVD uncut.

How about John Wayne playing Ghangis Khan? Big deal. How about Yul Brener playing the King of Siam AND a Pharoah of Egypt, shame? Or every indian character in pre 60's western movies played by white actors. Most people note, maybe laugh it off, certainly don't see it as a conspiracy, but not you.

We know you didn't compile that list yourself. Isn't C&P wonderful.

Another sign of white privilege is how they are depicted in the majority of signatures on online bulletin boards.

Oops.

The movie should be rated R but the studio cleansed it down so kids can see it.
I've read several articles criticizing the movie for just this, that it destroyed a significant part of the value of the novels in order to avoid an "R" rating.

You forget that I've lived and worked in parts of this world where my 'white privileged' ass was definitely in the minority by a 10:1 ratio and/500 more often the only whitie of 300 or 500 miles around, and didn't get any grief because of it. In many cases, my well being was in their hands. As I said, you and you're kind, small angry island folk with chips on their shoulders, more often than not, get what you give.

Blackface wasn't as common in the 50's as you want us to believe and went into disrupt with the passing of Vaudeville in the 30's, virtually disappearing by the 50's, 60 years ago. Nothing like a contemporary argument to support your position. I can't wait for you to bring slavery in the colonies to this thread.

Funny I went to see my favourite Shakespeare play a few years back at Stratford and they had blacks, SE Asians and orientals in it. Damned Rome must have been more diverse than I ever knew.

And the people who really suffer in Hollywood are the really white people:

Are albinos fair game for bias? In "The Da Vinci Code" movie, Silas, a red-eyed albino, is a monk murderer. The fact is, in films, albinos seldom are portrayed as average people.

The Associate Press reports:

Michael McGowan, an albino who heads the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, said "The Da Vinci Code" will be the 68th movie since 1960 to feature an evil albino.

Silas not evil? Paul Bettany, the non-albino actor who plays the albino, says Silas is not an evil character, but one who was warped unfairly by a bad childhood.

I doubt McGowan will understand that explanation. Has anyone ever heard of an albino person hurting anyone? I haven’t.
But as usual you are missing pretty much the whole point.

The role of Katnis is not tied to race at all. In addition, olive skin does not mean black. That is for sure.

It is people like you who call attention to the race of characters in film who create more racism. You try to make race relevant where it is not, or you believer race is always relevant. You do a great disservice to the progress we have all made in racism.

Now if they had cast the leads in "The Help" as white, it would be a problem because race is relevant to their role. Here it is not.

And if the producers of the film believe having this fine actress play the role will make the film better or make them more money...do you think you have a right to tell them to use someone of a race you choose? It is you who is advocating dictating a racial choice in a creative process which really does remind me of Stalin.
