That Reddit post is from when he signed the extension, and considering what he's done since....Maybe. As @tml says, it is too early to tell. But, so far right now he's playing like he deserves that and maybe more.

But, on the plus side of the ledger, he's only 26, which means he has probably at least 5-6 years of peak performance. And, if he's anything like his dad, he can still be a dangerous threat up into his late 30s. I will also say, Vlad looks like one of the best first basemen in the league. He makes some great catches on bad throws to first, and plays some heads-up baseball, like getting the runner at home to protect a lead.

All that being said, these long-term contracts usually look sort of bad by the end of them. But, if you are overpaying for some serious production during the players prime, then it could be worth it.

Really, the only player who might look good at the end with these long-term deals might be Shohei Ohtani, but he is a freak and arguably the best player in modern baseball history...

You have to look at his contract from an annual perspective - its $36 million per year. The back end probably won't be great, could be a disaster, but the Jays window is now., and who knows what state we, the team, baseball is in 10 years. We have also seen that spending $36M in free agency doesn't always bear fruit if you look across the major league... look what the Jays got this last offseason from Santander, Scherzer and Hoffman this regular season who cost $44m (for 2025).

Based on what he did in the regular season his $36M is a bit high, but not at ridiculous levels. And that is ignoring his contributions for his epic playoff run.
If we tried to spend that $36M this winter for the 2026 team it might not be that fruitful.

Agree with all of you, I take each contract and base it on a annual review like @maurice93 mentioned. This year - no doubt he is worth every penny - regular season is low bearing fruit, meaning you play well and and you get to the dance, no one player in baseball makes a difference it takes a collective and we all know that. Now take post-season - my man is on fire - his defense (gold glove worthy), MVP (ALCS) his energy, his commitment to the team and city and his bat have all played a role worth every dollar of the 36M. If they win the World Series and he does his part - well - he then gets a bi for next 2 years :D.

I know it was from 7 months ago, but I thought it would be interesting to post since I didn't think so at the time either.
So we're at the World Series now and we'll get to see if he was worth it. Gonna be nail biting type stuff no doubt.

As for Ohtani, he has his own thread in a Toronto forum. 😂

Ohtani has probably already paid for himself, how much merch are they selling worldwide? As for vladdy, 3 weeks ago it was a no, now it's a yes. He's been largely responsible for at least 8 home playoff games just this year, resulting in how much profit for Roger's, 80 million plus, maybe that's low? How much in tickets sales, merch, food, ads for tv and radio broadcasts? He loves the big stage and there's no bigger stage than against the Dodgers. I think he rakes this series. I think they should win 2 world series in his tenure.

A local newscast the other day showed the long line up to get into the Jays store at the Skydome. It wasn't even a game day.

The previous clip was from JomBoy Baseball. The Yankees suck, but we have to admit New York knows how to promote baseball.Trevor Plouffe (left) played for the Twins.

During the regular season, the Jays went to Chavez Ravine, Othani gave Vlady a Curly Howard head rub.
