And the Iran/Iraq war (and the Kurds - also Turkey). Iraq-Kuwait. And Sudan's civil wars. Afghanistan's civil wars. Somalia. Civil(ish) war in Indonesia. Pakistan has been in a few wars as well. These would be wars involving Muslims in the 20th C.

Anyone who thinks that the Muslim world was peaceful before 1948 should do some investigation. You might include an investigation of what else was new in the Arab world in the 30's and 40's that created conflict. (hint - it's black and found under the ground). Add to this the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the fading of colonialism allowed many of these Islamic countries the freedom to use violence as a political tool.

On the topic, the religion itself doesn't promote violence more than others but currently there are many people willing to preach and accept an extremist, violent viewpoint.

Over the course of history, most all religions have been guilty of this.

Violence is an unavoidable part of the human condition. For some, religion tempers this condition. For others, it amplifies it.

Umm Dairy Queen :D Are you seriously trying to argue that Hiller did not target a religious group for death in the middle of his non-religious destruction ?

Certainly, if you look at the carnage of the 20th century, the Christian nations of Europe and the west were responsible for most of the horror. Japanese militarism had some spiritual roots(ie, the divine emperor and a spitiual belief in Japanese destiny), but it seemed to me to be a byproduct of Japanese bushido and cultural tradition.

Islam had virtually no influence on 20th century slaughters. The rise of Islamic 'fundamentalism' seems to be related to the creation of the state of Israel by the western powers as opposed to something which just rose up out of the Koran.

Exactly !

Examples, DQ?

You can do the exercise yourself.

Name the ten most peaceful nations, say, in the last 100 years, and go from there.

I was responding to chiller's comment that the slaughters of the 20th century were carried out by Christian nations.

My point is that there were many slaughters carried out in the 20th century by Muslims, just, those slaughters aren't as famous because the slaughtered weren't white Europeans or American.

In the distant past it is certainly true that Christians fought wars for overtly religious reasons, although we seem to have grown up since then--we now fight our wars for secular and economic reasons.

The slaughters recently and presently carried out by Muslims, though, are carried out for overty religious reasons. They seem not to have grown up the way we have.

Religious leaders do not propagate wars????????????

You may want to reflect on this more.

DonQuixote said:
Leaders fight wars to increase their power and prestige.
They will use Nationalism and any other means of stirring

Power, prestige and control are relevant to religious leaders as well. History has many examples of those who used their religion to stir the masses to fight and die for them. I'm surprised I have to remind you of this.

DonQuixote said:
Though a country has a national religion it doesn't mean
their religion is the cause of their bellicose tendencies.
I never implied it did. My point is anything can "inspire" bellicose tendencies in certain individuals. Religious leaders have been guilty of this (even a few popes).

Is there any doubt about the validity of that premise?

But they're not doing it to spread their belief system.

They are doing it to obtain control - the human factor,
not the spiritual factor.
Whatever the motivation, the premise that religious leaders do not propagate war is incorrect.

I still disagree. Some have done so.

Keep in mind I'm not don't blaming the religion (or the teachings of it) but rather the interpretation of those teachings by certain individuals (including religious leaders).

Was the US Civil War fought for religious reasons or
for economic reasons? I don't recall the reason for
the South to cede from the Union because of religion.
Certainly there are other reasons to go to war and kill.

But when someone throws a grenade into a school bus full of Israeli children just because his religion told him to, then we need to hold that religion accountable.

Tabari VII:97 "The next morning, the Jews were in a state of fear on account of our attack upon the enemy of Allah. After the assassination, the Prophet declared, 'Kill every Jew.'"

Bukhari:V1B1N6 "Just issue orders to kill every Jew in the country."

Tabari VIII:29 "The Prophet said, 'No one should pray the afternoon prayer until they are in the territory of the Qurayza because warfare against the Jews is incumbent upon Muslims.'"

Bukhari:V5B59N362 "So the Prophet killed the Qurayza men. [the Qurayza were a tribe of Jews living in Medina before the prophet exterminated them] He distributed their women, children and property among the Muslims."

Yes, people are free to make their own choices and suffer the consequences. However, when someone is born into this mentality and taught to hate Jews and all things non-Muslim and they’ve been indoctrinated since birth, you can’t really blame them for acting on their beliefs. We need to take a serious look at that belief system and see it for what it is.

Doctrines of hatred such as Nazism and the KKK have risen up before and we’ve stood up against them. This one passes itself off as a religion and as such in order to be PC we have to acquiesce to it.

Here’s a comparison between two like minded doctrines. As you can see, der Fuhrer and der prophet were like minded in their opinion of Jews.

Mein Kampf:75 "The physical uncleanliness of the chosen people was as repelling as their moral blemishes."

Ishaq:250 "The bestial transformation occurred when Allah turned Jews into apes, despised."

Qur'an 59:14 "The Jews are devoid of sense. There is a grievous punishment awaiting them. Satan tells them not to believe so they will end up in Hell."

Mein Kampf:82 "They are seducers who condemned truth and denied the word. They are not to be pitied, but to be given their due - to smash the seducer and corrupter against the wall."

Ishaq:240 "The Jews are a nation of liars.... The Jews are a treacherous, lying, and evil people."

Mein Kampf:75 "The little Jew, blinded by the sudden light, was like a maggot in a rotting corpse." Mein Kampf:76 "Jews are a spiritual pestilence - infected with a disease worse than the Black Plague. They are spiritual and moral poison, the carriers of the worst sort of germs, infecting the minds of the world."

Ishaq:248 "Allah increases their sickness. A tormented doom awaits the Jews. Allah said, 'They are mischief makers. They are fools. The Jews deny the truth and contradict what the Apostle has brought. I will mock them and let them continue to wander blindly.'"

And BTW, Hitler wasn’t a Christian. He was an atheist.

I disagree that Christians or Muslims or any other group foughtwars over religious reasons. The slaughters listed above werenot fought to encourage the dominance of a particular theology.
I think the separation of Pakistan out of India was remarkably religious in nature. I think that the Iranian revolution was a religious war. The current internecine conflict in Iraq is religious in nature. The Taliban's war in Afghanistan is fairly religious, as is the conflict in Somalia between the Islamic Courts and the government.

To pick a recent non-Muslim example look at Northern Ireland.

Certainly there are elements of power in these conflicts, but that is because the religious institutions see themselves as the legitimate holders and wielders of earthly power.

In some of those instances the objective was forced conversion, in that the winner expects to be able to impose adherence to a specific faith on all who fall under their power.

Al Qaeda's specific stated goal is the establishment of a religious Caliphate across the Middle East that would impose AQ's brand of religion on everyone there.

To pretend that religion does not play a factor here is silly.

Biblical Atrocities

Exodus 32: 3,000 Israelites killed by Moses for worshipping the golden calf.

Numbers 31: After killing all men, boys and married women among the Midianites, 32,000 virgins remain as booty for the Israelites. (If unmarried girls are a quarter of the population, then 96,000 people were killed.)

Joshua:

Joshua 8: 12,000 men and women, all the people of Ai, killed.

Joshua 10: Joshua completely destroys Gibeon ("larger than Ai"), Makeddah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, Debir. "He left no
survivors."

Joshua 11: Hazor destroyed. [Paul Johnson, A History of the Jews (1987), estimates the population of Hazor at ?> 50,000]

TOTAL: if Ai is average, 12,000 x 9 = 108,000 killed.

Judges 1: 10,000 Canaanites k. at Battle of Bezek. Jerusalem and Zephath destroyed.

Judges 3: ca. 10,000 Moabites k. at Jordan River.

Judges 8: 120,000 Midianite soldiers k. by Gideon

Judges 20: Benjamin attacked by other tribes. 25,000 killed.

1 Samuel 4: 4,000 Isrealites killed at 1st Battle of Ebenezer/Aphek. 30,000 Isr. k. at 2nd battle.
David:

2 Samuel 8: 22,000 Arameans of Damascus and 18,000 Edomites killed in 2 battles.

2 Samuel 10: 40,000 Aramean footsoldiers and 7,000 charioteers killed at Helam.

2 Samuel 18: 20,000 Israelites under Absalom killed at Ephraim.

1 Kings 20: 100,000 Arameans killed by Israelites at Battle of Aphek. Another 27,000 killed by collapsing wall.

2 Chron 13: Judah beat Israel and inflicted 500,000 casualties.

2 Chron 25: Amaziah, king of Judah, k. 10,000 from Seir in battle and executed 10,000 POWs. Discharged Judean soldiers pillaged and killed 3,000.

2 Chron 28: Pekah, king of Israel, slew 120,000 Judeans

TOTAL: That comes to about 1,283,000 mass killings specifically enumerated in the Bible. The battle of 2_Chron_13 is so much larger than all the others that we probably should doubt it

Scroll, you like to post some statistics of the world atrocities, thereby making Islam seem less despicable by comparison.

Let’s take a look at the Islamic atrocities. The history of Islam is little more than one 1400 year continuous atrocity.

The Islamic Terrorist timeline 1400 years of Islam, 1400 years of terrorism.

This is a lot of reading (over 1000 pages) because Islam has been very busy killing for the last 1400 years. And oh yeah, it’s a religion of peace.

You quoting the Bible as fact is cool......Of course in so much as you accept it as fact you must then accept God as refered to in the Bible is the True God.
