All they need to do is limit the rules to where the technology can only advance so far like IRL, NASCAR, & Champ cars. This would allow teams with smaller budgets to compete.
Formula 1 never has been and never SHOULD be a spec series! It's allure is and always has been about motor sport technology and I never would want to see it watered down to a spec series. Many of things we take for granted in our cars today come directly from the racetrack. For the true F1 fans the sport is more than the race, it's about the engineering involved in making such a beautiful car astoundingly fast despite all the rules and regulations. The sponsorship money that is in F1 is second to none. Companies pay big bucks to brand the side pods of those cars for a reason.

With the slow demise of tobacco advertising the large car companies have stepped in and seen an opportunity. Formula 1 has become a marketing tool for the car companies to promote their product to car enthusiast around the world. I received my periodic mailing from Acura of Canada and darn if it didn't have Jensen Button's face and car all over it. The car company’s use F1 to show the world how good THEIR technology is.

As another poster so eloquently posted on another board:

“The rules of NASCAR/CART racing are geared to produce crashes and very close finishes so as to get high TV ratings; those of Formula One are geared to produce a winner, regardless of the margin of victory.

It boils down to entertainment vs. racing. Changes need to be made to the sport but throwing the baby out with the bathwater is not it.

Hey cardinal fang, I do agree with you in terms of F1 technology. I watch the races bcuz I can appreciate just what those cars are doing. I only suggested some rules as a way for more people to be able to compete without having to spend a few 100 million a year. You have to admit though, that when push comes to shove, racing is about the fans.

Hey spiff,
I think the bmw & mercededs produce more HP than ferrari, I think ferrari has the edge in downforce and braking.

in 2000, and 2001, the BMW powerplant easily had the most HP, reaching revs upwards of 18,500 bhp (williams broke the 19,000 bhp limit last year, i believe at monza). since 2002, it has been touch and go, with ferrari basically rivalling the BMW powerplant, and, having reliability to boot!

as for mercedes, ever since engine builder paul ilmor passed away in an accident, the merc engine has been a major letdown to the mclaren squad. how they pushed ferrari and williams in '03, right down to the last race in suzuka, in a year old car to boot, is a tribute to the awesome skills of kimi raikkonen. the engine troubles have finally now, as the '04 season comes to a close, been seemingly rectified. i think kimi and juan pablo montoya will really enjoy the 2005 mclaren mercedes next year!

as for this upcoming weekend, good luck jacques. keep your big mouth shut, and do what you used to do so well, just drive! podiums are definitely within his grasp for the last 3 races.

I've actually heard that the Toyota engine is putting out some pretty serious power as well. But where the Ferrari has them all beat is in the reliability department. They've found a way to produce reliable horsepower, and that (among other reasons) is why they're so dominiant.
