Formula 1 never has been and never SHOULD be a spec series! It's allure is and always has been about motor sport technology and I never would want to see it watered down to a spec series. Many of things we take for granted in our cars today come directly from the racetrack. For the true F1 fans the sport is more than the race, it's about the engineering involved in making such a beautiful car astoundingly fast despite all the rules and regulations. The sponsorship money that is in F1 is second to none. Companies pay big bucks to brand the side pods of those cars for a reason.luv2fress said:All they need to do is limit the rules to where the technology can only advance so far like IRL, NASCAR, & Champ cars. This would allow teams with smaller budgets to compete.
With the slow demise of tobacco advertising the large car companies have stepped in and seen an opportunity. Formula 1 has become a marketing tool for the car companies to promote their product to car enthusiast around the world. I received my periodic mailing from Acura of Canada and darn if it didn't have Jensen Button's face and car all over it. The car company’s use F1 to show the world how good THEIR technology is.
As another poster so eloquently posted on another board:
“The rules of NASCAR/CART racing are geared to produce crashes and very close finishes so as to get high TV ratings; those of Formula One are geared to produce a winner, regardless of the margin of victory.
It boils down to entertainment vs. racing. Changes need to be made to the sport but throwing the baby out with the bathwater is not it.
