You're best to get the latest Java runtime from Sun rather than relying on whatever Microsoft delivers. The Microsoft Java runtime is 5 or 6 years old (an eternity in this business) and was incompatible even then. The Sun version also does not have the security problems that the Microsoft one does.

Go to http://java.com and click on the "Get It Now" button at the top right.

AJ is right, you may actually need to disable the Microsoft Virtual Java and impliment the Sun Java, available at their site...

Okay, seriously now...

May be a security setting problem -> http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302708&Product=winxp

Otherwise, get the Opera browser. http://www.opera.com

It is fantabulous.
Agree Goob, the Opera browser is great, been using it for a few years now, but on 1/8/04 a Trojan virus below hit my PC while using Opera:

"The compressed file Dummy.class within C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\jar_cache45278.tmp is infected with the Trojan.ByteVerify virus.
The file was quarantined, but it could not be repaired."

Norton seemed to contain it but there I suspect there are still a few traces of something left.

Ended up completely removing Norton 2002 AV and reinstalling it, well the yearly subscription was about to expire so I got another years subscription anyways. This virus made NAV stall and hang to keep it from loading and running. Once I took out NAV completely and reinstalled it everything seemed to be back to normal.

Someone stole my line BUY a Mac. Opera is a great browser with great CSS and java compatibility. Or try on of the Mozilla project browesrs, Mozilla itself or Firebird are great fast browsers, the Gecko rendering engine is great.

PC user since '83 and I've also never experienced a virus of any kind. I don't even have a virus scanner.
