JP Ricciardi overplayed his hand. First, he went public WAY too early - and to the U.S. media first! Then he started setting arbitrary deadlines. Then he started negotiating in the media. All while leaving Doc hanging. Bush league.
Rogers killed JP further by going public with their financial worries.
The Phils - rightfully - had enough. Now the Jays have an asset that everyone knows "wants out" or at least to have hope that his team may contend (according to JP anyway - the whole throwing Roy under the bus is a whole other topic of discussion), an ownership group that has publicly stated that it wants to cut costs and the team that was the best possible match has moved on.
Boston (the next best match) will not overpay for Doc - it's not their modus operandi + they've got too much tied up in their starters already. The Yanks don't have the assets to match up. Neither do the Angels, as they don't want to give up guys in the Show. The Dodgers understandably don't want to give up anyone on their roster and their farm is not deep.
Even though this is Roy Freakin' Halladay we're talking about, teams are scared to give up the Bartolo Colon/Erik Bedard blue-chip prospects package, strictly because of economics.
Not sure about what Doc will be worth in the offseason - 45+ starts and 2 pennant races is a lot more valuable than 35 starts and one September.
Hopefully this means I get to see a few more Halladay starts in a Blue Jays' uniform!
