My broken clock is right twice a day.

The problem with Peterson (in my humble opinion) is he is so full of hate, likely a bigot, and generally narrow minded. However, he is smart… A very compelling speaker, and puts his hatred in to very clinical language. He dresses it up in Professor speak…. And for too many, it makes it sound like what he talking about is intelligent. It’s the language that fools you.
I don't think it is just the language.
For a lot of the things he talks about, he speaks as if it is something he struggles with himself. It isn't that he is clever and showing you the light so much as he is struggling with the same things you are and he has learned somethings and passing that along.

As a trivial example, the whole "clean your room" thing. That's something he struggles with so him saying it is important comes off as authentic.

Yes, he has the professor speak, but I think some of what is compelling to his audience is that connection.

You know, there is this thing called civility that's derived from good manners. It enables one to engage in a conversation without berating. You can Google it.
I am well aware of civility and good manners; in fact, I've forgotten more about civility and good manners than you will know in 50 lifetimes. But I'm only civil to people who deserve my respect.

Peterson main tenant is individual sovereignty and personal responsibility. He is against group identity.

Which is why he is reviled by the left.

To say that he is motivated by hate is erroneous.

I find most people who think these things of him have been swayed by cleverly edited clips of his or are basing their opinions on somebody else's.

Instead read his second book ''12 Rules For Life'' or watch the 30 minute video of his interview with Cathy Newman on YouTube.

In other words go directly to the source and judge for yourself
I have read 12 rules for life. It’s a decent book. And he is a smart guy. But just because that book is isn’t a bigoted manifesto, does not mean he is not a bigot. Hell, my dad managed to eat breakfast with family a few morning without swearing, but promise you, he liked to swear.

And he does not talk about personal sovereignty at all. He tricks you into believing that is what he is talking about. He talks about his “right” to not treat others with basic respect. He then blends it into the Gov’t legislating how to address people… which I also kind of agree with. The Gov’t should not have to tell people to treat people with respect… but that is a separate issue. The issue is, why does he refuse to act with basic human dignity. “Because I don’t have too”, or “because You can’t make me” are his only real arguments. Dressed up a bit… conflated with the legislative B.S. And he promotes it. Gives others license to act like shitheads.

Yes, he is human garbage.

However… He is careful enough to avoid certain language… and smart enough to steer conversations to the places he wants them to go. I will give him that. I remember when he posted a hit list on his website of other professors he did not agree with. Just a website with names. Names he would drop to students in some of his lectures and point to his webpage. Smart enough not to write down anything hateful he could be sued for. But we all knew what he meant it for.

There's this Japanese concept: kindness without pity.

Examples please? Lots of people of use clinical language. To say he is a bigot /full of hatred is reaching to say the least.
You have an internet connection. It’s pretty much his entire schtick. He’s really not that deep.

would you select your shrink on the merits or on inclusivity?
It's a more subtle question.

Is a capable shrink more likely to understand me, if he / she is my age and from the same background?

It would be more impressive if you remembered what you boast of forgetting.

Certainly, and that is why a social and medical worker is more likely to come to a correct diagnosis, if he/she comes from the same background and ethnicity as the client.

We all know what happens, when middle age scholarly, religious white men with generally good intentions try to help the disadvantaged indigenous population.

Just an example.

I despise Peterson as much as Shapiro for one single reason. And Trump is exactly the same.

These people think they are superior and will NEVER acknowledge any mistake. They will NEVER say they need to do better. They have ZERO humility. Over ego-ed prick if you ask me.

Just check it in your past working life. Who were the absolute toxic manager you had? Bingo always the one who were never never fucking ever able to admit they had done an error or mistake.
You do realize you have maligned Jordan Peterson without so much citing an example of his big ego and lack of humility. You posted a fairly superficial attack. If going on TV offering opinions and selling media is the example, that pretty much covers many celebrities.

If you knew more about him, you would know he battled addiction and left the public eye to seek treatment. He's been very humble about his experience. He's also battled the University of Toronto who I suspect found him a peculiarity and a minor irritant.

Right wing libertarian elitist earning a living............
I never got this political vibe from him. I'm not sure at all that if Jordan Peterson was an American that he would be voting Republican.

Last time I checked, they were independent institutions and could run their own internal and academic affairs.
I'm sure the University of Toronto thinks so. I don't think publicly-funded institutions are truly independent.

Sorry, did I ask for your input?
Not specifically. I just happened upon your posts in this thread and was captivated by your claim of having forgotten an awful lot of civility. People have a tendency to use that sort of trope but leave it ambiguous as to whether what they've forgotten is left forever in the past, or can be recalled at need. My post gave you the opportunity to make that plain. By this post, perhaps you have.

Yup, just as I suspected. Jordon Peterson is once again doing what he does best: whining.

Another white, middle-aged, heterosexual male who is fucked right off with the world because white, middle-aged, heterosexual males are no longer the centre of the universe.
This is what I don't understand. There are absolutely some white, middle-aged, heterosexual males who are fucking racist, sexist, old asshats. But as soon as a white, middle-aged, heterosexual male opens his mouth to voice an opinion, he's automatically labelled a racist, sexist, old asshat by virtue of race, age and sex.

Peterson has his own agenda, that colors the things he says. That doesn't mean all his arguments can be dismissed out of hand by calling him an angry white guy. He's advocating for people to get what they deserve, and for the most important marker of a person to be their actions and achievements, not the color of their skin or their sex. If that's the bar for "whining", then we're all whiners, because we've all complained about much more trivial shit than that!
