I'm 60 years old and suffered a stroke. I barely understand what you're all talking about, so I'm not confident or comfortable to handle it on my own. I want a recommendation for an inexpensive but reliable electrician.
Inexpensive is your problem. A guy who's gone through apprenticeship and testing to get licensed and invested in tools and a truck as well as making some sort of deal with a helper, needs to earn every minute of his day. No client ever wants to be billed for his time getting to and from their tiny job, and if he takes it, there's likely no time left in the day for bigger, so he must charge a premium/minimum. You'll want to make your job attractive, either by making it bigger (do you have fixtures you want changed?) or by offering a premium, like a half-day rate. Because your issue may lie deeper in the wall than the switch, you get to dangle diagnosis paid by the hour as an incentive.
Just changing a switch or a fixture is well within DiY capabilities, although your stroke may make it beyond yours. I'd be asking my neighbours, and the guys at my local hardware (it's why you go there and not always to Home Despot) to recommend a handyman who will take those small jobs. I've occasionally gotten guys working proper construction jobs nearby to give me an hour for cash. Even the handyman may want to add in stuff to make loading up and getting to your place worthwhile, but you'll do way better than asking TERBians who live all over the world to suggest a pro, when you haven't given us any hint where your job is. You may well find a neighbour who'd be happy to help for an hour for the price of a bottle of wine. But if that doesn't solve your problem, you'll still want the pro. Unfortunately, that'll be for a big enough job to be worth his/her while.
And there's always the Yellow [Web] Pages.
