I started converting my Kodachrome slides into digital format using a Nikon Coolscan V ED scanner.
It is a slow process (I have about 2500 slides) and before I get started into the process, I am experimenting with the various settings.

1- Some of my slides go back to the early 1950. I am not sure if they are Kodachrome 10 or Kodachrome 25. Later on I know I used Kodachrome 64. Is there a way to find out the ASA # of the slides? If anyone knows the date at which Kodachrome 25 and 64 were introduced on the market that would help, as my slides are all dated. I have researched on Google and could not find that info.

2- All my slides are in good condition. The colors are well preserved. I cannot see any noticeable difference when using the bit depth setting 8 or 14 other than the scanning time is doubled (around 5 min./slide on 14). Any advice?

3- I want to store the scanned results ( in .TIFF file format) for distribution to familly members. I thought of putting them on CD's until I realised I could only store 5 slides on a CD at 14 bits (10 at 8 bits). Each slide occupies 133.9 Mb of space at 14 bits. Putting them on DVD would allow me to put 35 slides which is still not a lot. Any suggestion on other storage media?

Any other advices on slide scanning will be appreciated.

Kodachrome 25 and 64 were introduced around the Spring of 1974. They were introduced with process K-14, an upgrade from K-12 which I think required a pre-hardener.

ANother thing, since I assume you will want to keep your digital copies for all eternity I would scan them at the highest res possible because you can go down, but you can't go up (with the same results).

TIFF's suck for memory as stated. I have heard many photogs use the RAW format which is supposed to give you the best quality with the least data.

Just a reminder: if you burn em to CD's your cd's have a limited lifespan and won't last forever....so DON'T LOSE THE SLIDES!!!!
