Correction... Kosovo claimed independence today. We'll see what Serbia has to say about that.

not a heck of a whole lot since they will be up against F-16's once again and we all know that the first part didnt end well for the Serbs, dont like their chances in the sequel.

As for the Kosova Albanians good for them pretty hard to stay friends with someone who has shot at you.

Wasn't it a Serb who kicked off WWI, laying the groundwork for WWII? Enough with these asswholes I say.

This is going to cause trouble. For NATO to have deliberately facilitated the unilateral separation of a province of a sovereign state is a very dangerous and foolish precedent. Further the deliberate disregard for Serbian and Russian feelings on this issue is something I fear we shall rue.

yep...shot the duke of austria or something
H.I. & R.H. Archduke (Erzherzog) Franz Ferdinand heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, whose murder together with his morganatic wife Her Highness the Duchess of Hohenberg (Herzogin von Hohenberg née Countess Sophie Chotek [Gräfin von Chotkova und Wognin]) in Sarajevo June 28, 1914 sparked the outbreak of the First World War.

By the way their three children and their families were interned by the Nazi Government at the Dachau Concentration Camp due to their public opposition to the Anschluss and the very public support by all three but in particular the eldest son His Serene Highness Maximilian, Duke of Hohenberg of their cousin Archduke Otto (titularly Emperor Otto I) who was under a death sentence in absentia from the Nazis

And what a mindless, stupid, arogant war that would be on our part!

Hohenberg? Excuse my ignorance but are they a mutant formed from the Hohenzollerns and the Hapsburgs? Time has taught me to take English - centric history with a very large grain of salt. During WW I the Austro - Hungarian Empire had secret negotiations with the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) to partition Serbia. Had the Austrians won the war the Serbs would have become the Kurds of Europe.

It was a morganatic marriage they couldn't inherit their fathers name or rank. Therefore they took precedence from the title created for their mother. The same as the Battenberg - post WWI Mountbatten family.

As you know all the Balkans were still part of the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th Century.

While Croats and Sertbs are Slavic and speak similar language, Albanians are quite different.
All true. Serbo-Croatian is considered one language written with two different alphabets.

The problem is that Kosovo is the heart of historic Serbia - there isn’t a good analogy in North America, but it's as if all the most famous and important historic sites in the country were in section where there was strong migration from across the border and now outsiders come in and say oh no that isn't yours it’s there's. Do you think you'd be P.O'd?

I know you have no way of knowing but I did long before Google and Wikipedia - sorry (insincere smile)

Sometimes it’s wise on anonymous boards where you don’t have any idea who you’re talking to, to give the benefit of the doubt

Because they are ungrateful a**holes thats why. If you love Kosovo so much then go f**king live there. The same goes for everyone else who waves any other flag in this country thats not red with a big maple leaf in the middle.

From what I saw.. many were flying the Canadian flags on their car, with the Kosovan flag

Apparently Serbs are protesting here as well... maybe fighting between them will break out in the streets of major cities here

I learnt that it's not a good idea to say that to them, especially Croats. They will take it as a major offence. In former Yugoslavia, there were the significant political efforts to treat these two (very similar) languages as one, for who knows what reason. I guess - Serbian domination, but I might be wrong. Being a minority, Croats didn't have too much choice. I know some Croats and Serbs and they claim that their kids born after Yugoslavia broke apart don't understand each other. It seems that both sides are doing very good job in making these languages as different as possible. But they have no problem learning English, on the other hand!

What a fuck is wrong with those people? More I listen to them and their reasons (or "reasons"), more I'm perplexed.

I'm so glad I'm not part of it.
As you say I have little doubt it's political. Although I don’t speak it, I know people who do and outside the area it's taught as one language. In fact that may in part explain the political dimension - things get particularly nasty when one understands every single word they are saying about you.

Canada may not recognize Kosovo's independence. The government is "considering" what to do. They'd be happier if the UN recognized it first.

They're worried it would set a precedent for Quebec.
