Acer seems ok
I just bought my 2nd Acer laptop. 1st was a 15.4" Aspire 3000, a nice little laptop for a very nice price. About a month ago picked up a 17" with AMD dual core, 2GB, 250GB hard drive for $749 at the Source (now 899). If the price is equal consider buying at the Source, esp if you intend to buy extended warranty. You get the same warranty as if you bought from Acer but also get 3 years on the battery, manufacturers only give 1 year even if you extend. Also warranty costs less, in my case I saved another 100.
It runs Vista and only minor probs with a few programs not running like they did on XP. My SO is quite computer illiterate and seems to like it for the most part .... so far
