It is no longer used as an anaesthetic since to achieve general anaesthesia with it requires a concentration of approximately 90%, at which point the lack of adequate oxygen supply to the brain for an extended period of time causes permanent damage.
It is however used as a sedative (which is different than anaesthesia) in concentrations of 35-50% which results in no damage to the brain.
