I have been giving Laura Secord chocolates to my lady friends for Christmas, they seem to be the best quality chocolates around. Last Christmas I gave Lindt Chocolates because they had nice gold boxes, big mistake. Lindt chocolates were good quality, but they were pretty much solid milk chocolates with no centers. Are there better choices than Laura Secord?

Personally I see nothing wrong with big chunks of milk chocolate, but Godiva and Lindor both get thumbs up from many people I know.

I gave boxes of Lindt chocolates away for Christmas last year, when I tried a box myself I found that it was simple milk chocolate. Lora Secord seems to be more of a special treat. When you give away Laura Secord chocolates the ladies exclaim OOOooooo, Laura Secord !!!

Just a tip, I bought 400 gram boxes of LS chocolates single box price $24.95 or two for $40.00
They try to charge you an extra $7 a box to tie an extra snowflake white chocolate outside the box, forget the add on and stick to the box.

Upgrade to truffles. Laura Secord's are good, but Godiva's are better. The Marché downtown usually has them as well - I can't remember the company that supplies them but they too are awesome. For Christmas they would create them in the shape of mice (in reference to Twas the Night Before Christmas). There are probably any number of chocolatiers in the city that can do a mean truffle. IMHO it's a step up from boxed chocolates.

Yeah I realize other people like fancy chocolate... I'm just a man of simple tastes.... frustrates my ma-in-law.. she likes to give us kids fancy chocolates and doesn't understand that I'm happy with a Hersey bar. <grin>

Best chocolates are the chocolate truffles that Costco cells for $10.99 and 1kg. They are only 30% sugar and taste very good. They come in a package of two boxes, so you can separate after opening outer package and give to two girls.

There are private chocolateries around Toronto like Daniel's in Etobicoke. You should try their Mohito chocolate and spicy chocolates, but you can't go wrong with Laura Secord either.

I think it's a matter of preferences. I would say Laura Secord, Leonis make great chocolate candies. But for pure bittersweet chocolate, it's hard to beat Lindt.

I like a good milk chocolate or a dark chocolate most of the time, but for Christmas Laura Secord is a special treat.

The place in the distillery district is Soma, and it is fantastic.

I would agree with Godiva.

Would also reccomend Green and Blacks, very good quality chocolate as well.

Larau Secord, Lindt and all the other high-end chocolate is inferior for the simply reason that their most heavily used ingredient is sugar, not cocoa. Sugar is cheaper than cocoa and that is why it is used in abundance over the cocoa and milk ingredients. If you look at the Costco truffles, they use the most expensive ingredients in higher proportions than the cheaper ingredients, which means you are paying for the quality. But again, 2kg (said 1kg before, but you actually get 2 1kg boxes together) of chocolate costs $10.99 and it taste amazingly better than the Laura Secords etc (IMO of course). It is called Truffles de France, is $10.99 for 2kg and you could give it to 2 ladies, or even 4 ladies if you really wanted because the big box is broken down into 2 1kg boxes and then when you open up the separate 1kg boxes, you get 2 gold foil and sealed bags of 500g chocolates. So, in the end, you could end up giving these chocolates out for less than $6 or $3, depending on how you decide to break them up.

I have bought from Soma several times. Not cheap but very good quality. They roast and mill their own cocao on the premises. Try their hot chocolate. I don't particularly like chocolate but luove that stuff.

If you're in the west end there is an excellent chocolatier in a plaza just east of Royal York on Dundas St called Daniel Le Chocolat Belge, same plaza as Bruno's Fine Food and it has never failed me. Godiva is good, but it can't be as good as the original because in the USA, where it is made you have to pasteurize the milk/chocolate. With that quality you can make a great impression with quality and not depend on quantity

I have found that the ladies enjoy Purdy's various types of chocolates. They've just started moving into Ontario (about two years ago).

Beats Laura Secords hands down.
