Ok simple question right?

we don't watch a lot of rental movies...perhaps that will be less if our DVD player has to be upgraded for an HD tv.

We have Bell expressvu with an HD PVR but no HD TV until this weekend.

Is 1080p required?

LCD or PLasma?

Thanks

Need you input by 3 PM today.

I was always told that PLASMA is better for fast sports due to no picture trail.
LCD is brighter & what I actually prefer.

1080p is not needed unless you are watching an HD or BluRay movie, Bell & Rogers only broadcast in 720p, but that could change in the future

1080p screen is required today.

While no stations broadcast in 1080p, most are using 1080i.
Most of the Rogers HD channels are full 1080 streams. The digital box puts out 1080i, only to be compatible with older TV's.

Only a few stations like Fox and A&E, are still using 720p.
Picture quality suffers when converting(scaling) between 720 and 1080. If you send a 1080 line picture to a 720 line screen, the TV will remove 1/2 the pixels (detail) in order to display it. (1920x1080 vrs. 1280x768)

TV's with poor quality scalers, will display Standard definition (SD) channels very poorly.

LCD's have caught up to Plasma's with regards to motion display. Previous motion differences were primarily due to comparisons between 720p plasmas and 1080i LCD's. LCD's today are almost all 1080p screens.

1080i / 1080p is a holdover from the analogue days when i / p actually meant something. In the digital world it doesn't particularly make any difference. The important thing is to buy a set that can handle 1080 (1920 pixels x 1080 pixels).

Funny thing is, HD (1920x1080) is finally catching on in a major way yet from a technical perspective it's quite outdated. Oh well ... I guess that's the way these things go.

No. It still means the same thing: an interlaced signal ("i") will show fuzzy edges when displaying rapidly-moving objects; a progressive signal will show more jerky movement when displaying those same rapidly-moving objects.

I'd recommend that you get an LCD set with Full HD (1920x1080p) a 120hz refresh and does frame insertion like the Samsung or the Sony Samsung calls it Automotion, Sony calls it something else. This greatly improves fast motion sports viewing such as Hockey.

LCD is the way to go if you have an XBox or Playstation as Plasmas are likely to burn in fairly quickly (The Rogers Cable guide comes to mind) (Yes, even with the pixel shifting technology). LCD while it technically can still burn in, it takes a very long time for it to start showing up.

plasma is the only way to go. Burn in is an issue with craptastic plasmas from Samsung. I use my Pioneer plasma for gaming and it's been almost a year of use without any hint of burn-in whatsoever.

LCD is great for static images and if you sit right smack in the middle. Once you introduce motion, or sitting slightl off axis, they look like crap.

I prefer plasma. It has an all around better picture IMO. I don't care if LCD is brighter. Even my plasma settings maxed out will burn my retinas. I game for hours without image retention. Basically people with LCD like LCD, people with plasma like plasma. A co-worker of mine loved his plasma then got an LCD as a bedroom TV to compare the technology. He likes the plasma far better and regrets getting the LCD.

If you're rich, go with Plasma.... but not no-name!

Else, go with LCD and make sure it's 120Hz. Perfect for both gaming and action movies.

Now that LCD has 120 mhz I would go with the LCD do not purchase a LCD at 60 MHz it is too slow for sports. If you get a plasma you have to remeber about the glare factor since it has a glass front. Plasma will last you around 7-10 years depending on usage the brightness will dimmer over years.

I had no choice but to go with LCD in my living room b/c of a large window that would've produced an unwatchable reflection had I gone with plasma. I must say I prefer the crisper image on my LCD as opposed to my relatives plasma.

Ok ..we got a Samsung LCD.

We have the Bell HD PVR that drives two TV’s. On the back are three grey coaxial cables. One is labelled #1 which is the Samsung I think although I have hooked it up with a HDMI cable.

The 2nd coax is labelled #2 and runs through our ductwork upstairs to kid’s bedroom to a regular TV (Panasonic) which is controlled by #2 remote. The 3rd is labelled House Distribution and as I type this I am thinking that maybe this is the coax that runs upstairs...I need to check again.

I have tried all ways to hook up a 3rd TV (which used to be the kid’s) in master bedroom so that we could access the PVR using the #1 remote control.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Where to buy LCDs aside from bestbuy/futureshop/2001 audio? I'm in the market for one but I can't seem to find a good deal on a 52" LCD Bravia or Samsung. Some asian places i've been to will do tax in if you give'em cash which isn't bad but looking for a little better price.
