LCD TV problem

I bought an LCD TV about 1.5 years back and today the screen went blank in the middle of a TV show. The speakers were working and the power was on, so it seems that the lamp has died.

Is there a way to fix this problem or should I just throw the TV. Given the small life span, I am not going to buy a LCD TV in the near future.

There is a florescent tube light behind the screen. Sure it can be fixed.. no need to toss it out.... it's only 1.5 years old. look in the manual about changing the tube light.

The early models apparently only had a shelf life of 10,000 hours.

the lamp will probably cost you 75% of the cost of a new tv.. probably further ahead to buy a new tv.

The lamp runs about $225. Check the manual for the particular type you need and then you might find it at Best Buy or another store that sells lcd projection tv's...

He said it's an LCD TV... those use a florescent tube light behind the screen.

If what he has is an LCD projector then yes those bulbs are extremely expensive. $225 is about right.

Thanks for the replies. I opened the TV and did not see any lamp or tube. It looked like a black screen (like a laptop) with some wires (databus type) going in the screen. Perhaps it is one of the old models. I had bought it from Gateway and they apprently did not send any manuals. The self life of about 10,000 hours is about right for my case.

At a viewing rate of 3 hours per day, those 10,000 hours should last 9 years.

Seems the average life of TV's made today is 5 maybe 7 years. I tend to use 5 years as a working number. So say you pay $3000.00 for a TV. Figure $700.00 per year to own that TV. In many cases this translates to a brand spanking new TV per year if you opt for the conventional sets.
