Checking out latest offerings in 42" LCD TVs

Seems to be 5 major brands (at least in Futureshop) that I have come across:

Toshiba
LG
Panasonic
Sharp
Samsung

The highest priced appears to be LG and then Sharp.

There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews on thse. I plan on using just cable input for now (No HD) but may go HD next year (don't know).

I also want to hook up my computer to the thing.

Any opinions on which one is best for the $s?

I will incude a Pole too to see where people stand.

How do you plan to use it most of the time? SD TV viewing? Standard or HD/BluRay DVDs? Gaming?

Personally I think it would be pointless unless you're going with HDTV or HD/Bluray. SD TV looks worse on a 42" screen than something smaller. I would wait until you go HD next year, TV prices will be lower then as well.

All of that aside, I would rank them 1) Sharp 2) Panasonic 3) Toshiba 4) LG 5) Samsung

My attitude to buying anything like this:

If it is a major brand name, the quality is there. So basically go by what's important to you: features (aka inputs), image, contrast, sharpness etc.

Take a look at the sets at the store. Pick the one that looks best to YOU, not the one that looks best on paper, or what the saleman tells you.

As stated, if you're not going HD, I wouldn't bother at this point. If you're using it for gaming, be careful of screen burn-in. Some games have things like score, points, weapons etc that stay put throughout the game. If you're playing for a long time, that could get burned into the screen. (same goes for things like the windows tool bar etc).

If you are using it for games, make sure you check out the refresh rate. if it's too slow, you'll notice it during game play.

Ya interesting but todays flyer does not have any Sony LCDs listed. Would you consider Sony better then above?

Sony is generally more expensive than any of the other brands. They make a good product, but I don't know if it is the best tv for your money.

The Toshiba Regzas are quality TVs, they get my vote.

I thought a guy named Radio Shack would like brands like Tandy, Realistic, Gennexa or Optimus

Maybe sony doesnt make lcd in that size? if you like plasma the Pannies are nice but you need light controlled room for plasma.

1) Sony - they've been ranked #1 in LCD for some time. Best deal is at G & G on Kingston in Scarb.. There are many different versions of each size, talk to a qualified sales person to find out what best suits you.

2) Samsung - getting better and better every year

3) Sharp - best looking design, thinest TV out there, can't go wrong from here up

4) Toshiba - great build quality, picture a little questionable

5) LG - careful about Canadian warrenties, they use independent repair shops

6) Visio - stay away, NO Canadian support

And the best TV out there, not hooked up to a computer, would be the Panasonic Plasma. Personally it is my choice for movie and sports watching, and they did get Consumer Reports highest rating for a flat panel.

You're asking about LCD tv's. As far as I know, Panasonic only makes plasma tv's. I did some research a few months back and they seem to make the best plasma.

If you go LCD, then the Sharp seems to be your best bet.

Just saw on TV that the black friday thanksgiving sales are on in the US.

You might want to pressure Best Buy Canada to match the price. Don't know if it will work or not.....

I saw this Sharp Aquos 1080p 46" Widescreen LCD HDTV** (LC46D64U) for $1999.99 in Canada

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/subclass.asp?catid=24558&mfr=&logon=&langid=EN&list=&page=2&sort=2

Tomorrow only, it's on sale at Circuit City in the US for $1299.99.
