OEL was injured in the first period. They played most of the game with 5 D. They had to play Rielly on the PK when Benoit took a penalty. They also had the lead for most of the game so Edmonton was chasing. McD and Draisaitl played lots because they were chasing. McCabe played over 30 minutes and Tanev over 26. Under the circumstances they were great.

Give the Leafs credit they scored some goals. All 3 in the first were because of net front from Max P and Knies. Something they didn't have in their 3 game losing streak. Of course Leafs can't win without good goaltending. That's a given. Nylander topped all Leafs forwards in ice time!!!

Alternate captain for Team Sweden is none other than your Willy Nylander !!!
His hat trick bumps him up to 2nd in goals behind only Draisaitl.

Morgan Rielly is 225 lbs. For comparison Reaves is also 225 lbs. Knies is 227 lbs.
Luke Schenn his D partner last playoffs is also 225 lbs.

That Morgan Rielly contract extension has turned out to be a noose around the Leafs neck. FFS I said from the get go that was horrible. The dude cannot play defense. And this season he seems like he can't play offense either. 22 points in 50 games. A minus 18. And 19 total hits so far. They would be smart to buy him out because he's pretty much untradeable at this point.
That's the Leafs for you. handing out a top D contract for a guy who is at best a number 4, but more like 5/6 in the depth chart. The contract never makes a guy a top player.

Are you saying that that's the preferred playing weight for defencemen and power forwards? 😉

I'm saying never knew Rielly was that big.
I always thought Schenn was the big guy when they played together.
Rielly is the biggest defenseman on the current Leafs roster.
A guy with his size should be winning more board battles.

Has he always been this heavy throughout his nhl career, or did he gain substantial weight recently?

Reaves has to be much heavier than 225. He looks min 240.

I was just giving you the gears.

He's never played "heavy" defense. It's always been his mobility and puck carrying. It may be unrealistic to expect him to play a different game now.

Tanev doesn't hit. Yet he's very effective. Rielly actually has close to twice as many hits as Tanev.
The thing with Rielly is he is heavy. He doesn't need to hit but he should also not make weak plays for someone with his size. Especially along the boards.

So I'm a big baseball and soccer fan and I dont watch much hockey, but could someone please explain whats the use in playing a regular season when half the teams make the playoffs (16 out of 32). It just seems like a gigantic waste of time, and it makes the season go on way too long.

I know I'll be attacked for this post, so bring it on :p

What's your problem? You clearly didn't notice that the NHL has been scaling back on letting teams into the playoffs. It used to be 66.6667%

Its used to be 16 of 20 at one point. But the first round was only best of 5 series. I'd prefer going back to that.
