Rielly has been the target of a lot of criticism lately. Let's be fair and point out his stats in last night's game against Boston.

During good times and bad times he's always kept his cool and maintained some class. I admire that about him, despite sometimes being frustrated with his play.

Leafs were terrible for the first 2 periods but Stolarz kept the game within reach for them to pick up the intensity in the 3rd. They did this without Tanev going with 5 D which makes it even more astounding.
Without Nylander for the OT as well due to injury.

Robertson was fiesty. If he plays like this he may be a keeper or at least increase his trade value.
Rielly had 4 pts. An exceptional pass between the D's legs to Robertson. Holmberg 3 straight games scoring. As long as McCabe plays with Tanev in the playoffs he'll be fine.

There are only 3 players with more points than Marner at this moment. He is tied with Conner McDavid in points. Shanahan, pay the kid the same as Matthews and get it over with.

I love McCabe’s grit but man I just wish he wouldn’t try these cute little passes so often in the defensive zone. Not the first time he turned over the puck trying that and costed the Leafs a goal. He’s lucky he was bailed out this time but if he does that in the playoffs he may not be so lucky.
Exactly

I know the Leafs keep winning but there's something about the way they play that is unsettling to me.
It kind of feels like they lack some real jump, they get pinned down in their own end too many times for too long,
they get outshot most nights, getting back in the old habit of slow starts.
I get it, they're winning, but it concerns me for the playoffs. They seemed a lot more aggressive at the start of the season.
I am biased towards super aggressive forechecking.
It almost seems like they've reverted back to that Randy Carlyle system
years ago when they would lay back in the neutral zone and let the other team into their zone and try to counter, instead of
taking the game to the other team.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone go all the way with that system.

Leafs have won 3 in a row but TB has won 6 in a row and are only 4 pts behind with a game in hand.
I think the Leafs recognize the importance of winning the Division. A 1st round matchup with either Florida or TB will be a pick'em series at best. Better for Florida to play TB 1st round. Either of these teams can win the cup because they have. The last 5 years one of Florida or TB has either won the cup or made the Finals. Imagine another 1st round exit. Even as underdogs doesn't matter.

This is probably the best game he's had all year, he's been horrific otherwise. Personally I love the guy he's a great teammate and leader. But he's not playing at a level you'd expect from a $7+ million per year player. And in this town that rightfully gets called out. I've said it before and I'll continue to say it, try him at forward.

Ovi surpassed Captain Mats record for overtime goals he now has 27, Mats had 24. He still has a better playoffs record than the current crop. The fans didn't warm to him, he was a quiet leader.

The Leafs collapsed into oblivion when Bryan Birke released him.

Brian Burke didn't release Sundin. JFJ tried to trade him but he wouldn't waive his NTC. He left as a free agent.

Leafs are 6-1 in their last 7.
and still they can't shake off TB.

Det has won 8 of their last 10. They're now the most likely to make the playoffs as a wild card.
Your Justin Holl is playing bottom pairing and tertiary PK.
He was playing primary shut down with Muzzin and primary PK in his heyday with the Leafs.

6-0 and still Tampa can't catch the Leafs.

Perspective is everything.

When you think about it, each team is 6-1 in their last 7. All that's happened is there are 7 less games on the schedule for Tampa to work with.

Well, it wasn't too long ago when TB was swimming with the likes of Ottawa, Detroit, and Boston.
So TB has separated themselves from the bottom feeders. They're starting to ramp it up.
They had 5 players playing in the 4 Nations to the Leafs 3 and also 2 star Russians that didn't play.

Florida had 8 players in the 4 Nations and a star Russian goalie that didn't play.

Undeniably correct.

But hot streaks don't last forever.

Leafs next 3 games are NYR, Pitt and San Jose. Tampa plays Flames, Caps and Fla. On paper it looks like advantage Leafs for that small stretch.

Hot streaks do end but that also applies to the Leafs.
They are notorious for performing like crap against the weaker teams although it appears Berube has fixed that somewhat. They're also playing without Tanev for at least one of those games. Their PK was exposed without him and McCabe looked lost. Tkatchuk is injured so TB is playing Florida at the right time.
TB has 25 games remaining. Plenty of track left. They're also +50 goal differential to the Leafs +20

Context is everything.

So then, I need to ask you, do you think that Tampa will finish ahead of the Leafs? ;)

At this moment all things considered I'd give it 35.33% TB, 33.33% Leafs, 31.33% Florida.
Det, Ott, or Bos nearly 0% chance. They'd have to jump minimum 3 teams although Det could conceivably take 3rd if one of the top 3 teams collapses. I'd put Leafs playing either TB or Florida in the first round at 66.6%
