Credit yeah. Money no. (Just ask Robert Johnson's estate.) And lip service don't pay the rent as easily as a royalty cheque does.
Interesting side story about the Stones and them actually cutting cheques.

We all know the famous "Gimme Shelter" Truly a rock anthem. Not just for Richard's iconic guitar work, but more so perhaps for the backup singing (some might even say lead singing) of one Merry Clayton. She completely steals the vocals from Jagger and over powers him and makes the song.

As legend has it, she met up with the Stones while they were recording Let it Bleed in LA and they were wowed by her voice and asked her to sing on Gimme Shelter. She goes in and just belts it out. Just incredible. So the Stones say, "we have to record this, you have to do the song"

And she says NO.

"Whadda ya mean no?"

"Not until I get paid. Paid upfront"

The Stones couldn't believe that she would have the audacity to demand to be paid up-front. (I suppose they figured that she should have been happy just working with the them.)

But no, she insisted, pay me up front, or I walk. So they paid her and the rest is musical history.

Don't know if the story is true, but it would seem to fit. Legend also has it that Merry (who was heavily pregnant at the time of recording and ) so furiously recorded this song that she suffered a miscarriage literally from overstressing herself to belt out the vocals.

Tiberius, that is sad!

I keep waiting for Mick Jagger to record with Adriano Celentano, he only gave him his image. So I just found out the the dance videos between Adriano and Monica are not free. This is the best I can do.

Theft is theft and they did it knowingly. You obviously don't know (or care) about artists who try to make a living off their own creations. Real nice for those who say "so what" about theft until they are the victim, then the story changes.
who should care?..you should care.because you are putting cheaters on a pedestal............and you are inadvertantly lowering the standards of rock and roll by describing them as one of the greatest rock bands ever..im old school...we should demand integrity from rock idols and not trivialize music by stating "who cares if they stole some songs"..........never lower the musical bar..........................and i know you said it before, but you are still unconvincing...
Your both right, I don't care if they stole them or not. They made the songs worth listening to. I don't have any Willy Dixon in my collection but I do have all of Led Zeppelins.

Yes, as indignant as I could be about non-acknowledge theft - I'm not returning the CD's.

I've been called worse things by better people. (I even sampled that quote actually.....)

Love Led Zeppelin. Don't care if they copied a few notes here or there. They are still brilliant.

Here here! Led Zep actually loved those old guys who inspired them including Elvis 'The King' Presley. At the time when the band was young, they probably didn't know they would be global rock stars or sell as many records as they did.

I will have to agree here.

They had to be sued and proved in court that they 'stole' those songs. It wasn't obvious to anyone else. Still not obvious to me. It isn't blatant plagiarism.

Actually, to great extent. So much so that he conceded and was forced to forfeit royalties from that song.

By that point, the progression popularized by Berry had become so normalized in rock music, that it didn't warrant any credit.

(If we were to take things to an extreme, the entire first albums by the Ramones and Clash would have given credit to Berry et al.)

When I say to 'some extent', it wasn't blatant.

The court had to get experts to analyze the cadence, rhythm, and what not to determine if it was plagiarism.

Sometimes I would imagine, songs are burned into a musician's subconscious and goes into their creative machinations.

I only discovered Adriano Celentano in recent years although he has been around for decades as a musical artist, actor and I think even a comic. It was at a function that the DJ played L'emozione Non Ha Voce and I was hooked.

Led Zeppelin owe Willie Dixon a huge debt of gratitude. I saw him live @ The El Mocambo on two occasions with The Chicago Blues All Stars. For the second show the band almost made exclusively of his sons. He was a dedicated stand up bass man, he never played the bass guitar.

Incredible for you to see Willie Dixon.

I've seen Robert Plant say in an interview acknowledging that Willie Dixon should get what was owing to him.

In the late 70s, saw my fave band Tower of Power at the El Mocambo too and the late Domenic Troiano, formerly of The Guess Who, played some songs with them. Had a beer with the leader of T.O.P. downstairs at the bar before the show. He was wasted at the time lol.

Years ago when this first came out I changed my view of them. Led Zeppelin, the best cover band ever.

That was one of the perks of living in Parkdale ( not many) at the time. I probably would have missed him had I been living in the suburban wasteland. I had seen his name on various album sleeves but I really didn't know who he was. He was described to me as the true father of rocknroll, with good reason. His impact on the music we listen to is profound.

Dan Ackroyd and JD Roberts attended the second show.

I can still listen to Led Zeppelin, ACDC forgedboutit!

Once they developed their songwriting legs they did come up with some good tunes.

I admit I liked Led Zep alot. So I accept I am biased, but the above video presented, can someone explain how that (which quite frankly is boring to me) is evidence of this.

On a forum twoplustwo.com, a highly credible poster has claimed that Eienstein has plagiarized as well.

Anyone with any sense knows there is tons of bullshit going on. But to what extent :)

Glad to see that Plant gave him whatever credit he is due, but honestly, the video posted is boring and no interest to me at all.

He might be a moron, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. Zeppelin has been caught ripping other artists off time and again. Only a, errr, moron would deny it with so much freaking evidence out there. Mind you, they still rock, and even if they lifted the 4 measure intro of Stairway note-for-note from some forgettable shitheap of a Baroque hippie band, they made it infinitely better than the original. Still, 'tis rather shitty not to cut a cheque as well as credit the original composers.

this topic is frosting my ass.................again , Harrison was found guilty of lifting a song by the Chiffons, called He,s So Fine...........there is no "to some extent"about it...he paid a settlement
I suspect you are also aware that that ruling was reversed.
