hyperdog, only you know how you feel and I respect the fact that you've already decided, but it's a lot of pain for 2 inches. As a woman, I do have to say that most of us don't care about the length of your legs. :) If you are a good person, healthy, funny and caring, THAT'S what matters.

I saw a documentary on TV about it awhile ago. It looked VERY painful with leg braces, immobilization, crutches, etc. Why? 5'9" is not short. And, I bet after you heal, everytime the weather changes, you'll feel it in your legs.

Now,off my soap box. If you are 100% sure about this, research, find the best facility and go there. If you get it done in China, hey, you'll see China too! (well at least from a hospital room window)

I decided >>>>>>>>>>

... to go to France to the doctor that invented the internal device. Less pain & scarring. The 2nd day you are up and walking & doing walking excersises while lenghthening. I will go from 5'5" to 5'10. I am 44 & tired of always being "the friend" & shall shed the "short man" stigma. Friends & family agree that i am athletic, good looking ,nice guy who has his sh*t together & successful.... & it is a shame to be held back in finding a companion because of this social stigma. Will be planning for in a year & looking forward to be thought of as just an average guy. Amazing to hear that practically all women , even very petite ones just cannot get past the " short man stigma" that gives the feeling that ... " he just isn't manly"

I think this goes down as one of the more interesting threads on TERB. (And we've had some pretty good threads over the years!)

Anyway for the record, operations of this kind are well beyond my personal level of comfort. But having said that, best of luck to you hyperdog. Keep up posted on the progress. I hope you find what you're looking for.

Just for the heck of it I searched both the Mayo And the Cleveland Clinic
for "limb lengthening.
It would appear that neither of these fine medical establishments offer this
procedure.

Give cause for thought?

I would go to Italy, average height of 5'6", and I love Italian women.

I am surprised that the Canadian average is 5'11", I would have thought that it was a shorter, perhaps 5'9" or so. Perhaps in Toronto the average is lower because of the all immigrants from shorter countries.

The Canadian average is 177 cm which is 69.7 inches, or just under 5'10".

Keep in mind.......

the news article is outdated & now there is the internal device the allows the person to be walking in a couple of days after sugery ,less pain & infection. True... soooo important to not be cheap & go to modern hospitals & experienced surgions such as in the U.S.France, Germany. Until in my mid. University years did I start to realize how much women just don't find short men sexually attractive. It took a long time to connect the dots since everyone said I was attractive. My buddies asked sisters & female friends & girlfriends & ..... well there you have it. I do NOT think I would be wanting to use that external device ... with all its potential problems. It might be cheaper but I think it should be put out of use. ........ IDEA: maybe we should co-ordinate a TERB group to go at 1 time to France. Get a group rate!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the internal device is alot more dangerous than the external. If the internal malfunctions - they have to do another surgery to take it back out - and the whole lengthening process gets interrupted/stalled - and suddenly you have lost time (the time you estimated it would take to lengthen your legs suddenly gets a whole lot longer) and there's alot of complications - meanwhile, the external device can be repaired ALOT easier and without surgery by a specialized doctor.

Much reading.........

... concluded that extreemly rare for malfunction of internal device as well as infection. As with many proceedures it is important to go to someone who has had much experience with it. Nothing 100% risk free. No guarantee that I will drive my car & come back home alive.

I'm pretty sure driving is alot safer than having metal rods inside your legs..

As for the lastposting......

... I believe that external device should be put out of use. Even in that article despite the possible difficulties & pain & lack of mobility while going through the process with the external device..... the surgon in the U.S. will consider it with men 5'3". I did the research & the internal device, done with the doctor in France is the way to go. Going from 5'4.5" to 5'9" sure is a game changer. I really think that guys that think a "super short" guy should just try harder & " be more personable" are out of touch. Been there, done that.... & I am 44 yrs old. NOT going to let more years go by being the " nice guy friend". Each to his own .... your life is your to shape.... grab hold of opportunity.

I know many men 5'5" and below who are married, dating, parents, etc. If you are 44 and not married, but have been trying to marry, you have problems that go beyond your height. I am sorry but someone has to say it to you. You are going to go through a horrific process that WON'T change your life. In 5 years you will be 49 years old, 5'9" tall, and still single. You will regret the risk, time and money you spent on all this. Instead, work on changing whatever other factors in your life are keeping you single. Nothing will change for the better, no matter how desperately you want it to.

Don't believe me? Look around and see how many guys there are who are 5'9" or taller who are STILL SINGLE, despite trying to find a wife. They have what you crave (height) yet can't land a woman. You are no different. Longer legs won't change anything. In fact, it may even make you LESS desrirable to a woman. Women want confidence in their men, and your surgery will reveal you to have low self-esteem, to be weak. I am willing to bet that most normal women, when they find out what you went through, will be extremely turned off by this massive personality flaw, far more than by your height.

Don't even bother, CapitalGuy. This guy isn't listening. He's convinced that being short is his biggest obstacle to happiness, and nothing will change his mind.

I'm about his height. I do not feel disadvantaged in any way by it. Some women prefer taller a man. Some prefer one with darker skin. I would no sooner dye myself a darker shade of manly than I would undergo surgery to get taller. But these clowns will.

You're right. In 5 years he'll be a little taller (still below average) , a lot poorer, and still have low esteem. I feel sorry for the poor bastard.

hyperdog PM me if you want more info. I also looked into this about 10 years ago wanting to add 2 inches to my 5'5" frame. It's pretty serious and very painful. Recovery is months...

All the best!
Reagan, is obvious that you're female...

question is: Did you do the procedure?

Capital guy........

first..... the internal device by the French doctor who invented it & the procedure is easier than the external cage. 2) you know nothing about my confidence as do my friends & family. I do not see my shortness as a personal flaw or making me less of a person or man. I have come to terms with the fact that there is a social stigma attached to the "short man" that just DOES inhibit women from feeling physically attracted to a guy & see him as manly especially if he is slim & not a husky build. I DO NOT see it as a magic bullet that woooes the ladies. YES, some very charasmatic men who are short such as our former Prime Minister ( Pierre Trudeau) can seduce women easily. I have a pleasant, some what outgoing personality BUT not super funny or charasmatic enough to negate the social stigma. My friend who is an associate V.P. at a bank & known me since 1st. year University acknowledges there is a social stigma & seen it first hand in greatly reducing the success many a man has had in dating. But I am sure your view is set , so be it.

cute-bald and I will be back in this thread in one year to prove you all wrong. And then a lot of people will wish they had done it when we did.

People should do their ..........

... research & also read diaries of those who have done it before passing judgement. A quick glance & a few readings will not get to the details. Those who are not interested do not have the interest in doing the time consuming research .... I understand ..... BUT then perhaps reserve judgement. AGAIN .... to those doing it ..... DO NOT think it is a magic bullet....lots of average guys find it a challenge to date. AT LEAST you remove a social stigma. I have known sooo many women that say when they see a short guy ..... before even talking to him , the lasting impresion of short guys.... DORKS , efemminate.

CB: what kind of outcomes do people who get the surgery generally experience, in terms of the percentage that are glad they had it, the percent that regret it, the percent that are as lonely, bitter, scarred and poor as the posters are warning about?

To me, it sounds very painful. But all the dire warnings in the thread remind me of the dire warnings in the breast implant threads. When I know that the vast majority of women who get implants are glad they did. But leg lengthening does sound painful, good luck with it.
