Great Great David Crosby, too many records and songs to mention. 😭😭

Singer, songwriter and guitarist co-founded The Byrds and supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Legendary US musician David Crosby has died aged 81, after a “long illness”.

The singer, guitarist and songwriter was part of the original line-up of The Byrds and appeared on their first five albums, including the 1965 hit cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Mr Tambourine Man’.

He also co-founded the folk rock supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash along with fellow musicians Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. They later added Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young to the line-up.

In a statement to Variety, his widow Jan Dance said: “It is with great sadness after a long illness, that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away. He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django.

“Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us. His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music. Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched.

“We will miss him dearly. At this time, we respectfully and kindly ask for privacy as we grieve and try to deal with our profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers.”

He was famously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice and five albums to which he contributed were included in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The greatest thing about Crosby was that he hung around with genuinely talented people and played on their records for a few years.

Here
I grew up with this music, its like a piece of your life goes. Truly legendary.
Me too CSNY were my traveling music when I was on the road. This was expected for years, he was a terrible self abuser and had 2 liver transplants. For me he represents a better time.

I didn't know he had 2 liver transplants, I know he had one from getting hepatitis C and drinking/drugging. Great times, more loving times. Extremely talented

I can listen to him singing the original version of Southern Cross another thousand times and it will always bring a smile to my face. I also listen to the song over and over whenever I am sailing and wonder what a long Souther Ocean passage would be like...

The words resonate with the life I have lived... <happy sigh>

I'm a fan of his music, but a lot of people said enough consistently bad things about him that I lost a lot of respect for him.
Yeah, it was my understanding that the other guys were not talking to him but I don't know all the details.

He badmouthed Neil Young's wife Daryl Hannah, then latter apologized to her and Neil.

This is really sad news.

The saddest part is that he never managed to come to terms with his former bandmates and play music with them again as it seemed like they just couldn't stand him anymore. And now he's gone. A huge part of me can't help but wonder how Stills, Nash and Young (especially) are feeling right now. They have forever missed an opportunity to bury the hatchet with Crosby. He was, whether they like it or not, part of their families and he wanted to sing with them one last time. I watched the Cameron Crowe documentary on HBO, "David Crosby, Remember my name" and I was mesmerized by his honesty and how forthcoming he was, but more than that, his voice, even at age 76 at the time, was crystal clear. He sang like a one man choir. Stunning voice. If you haven't seen this doc, I hugely recommend it.

I've always been a fan of the Byrds and CSNY and a huge part of both those bands just left the stage forever today. It's the final curtain call. It is not lost on me that we are all getting older and with so many of rock's greatest voices now in their late 70's and 80's (if they are still alive), it won't be long before they are all gone. The "greatest generation" of rock musicians aren't long for this world. And that is truly tragic.

If there is one saving grace in this stark reality, it's that the music survives. They've left us with an indelible record of their achievements, their art, their lives. Truly a gift for the ages.
