Farley Mowat did not publish his war memoirs until 1979: And No Birds Sang?

The novel starts with his party animal daze as a recruit in England and ends in the cataclysmic Battle of Ortona. 2300 Canadians lost their lives there mostly in house to house fighting with the Nazi's. Mowat described Ortona as The Valley of Death.

Il numero dei caduti (1665 in totale) in base alla nazionalità è così suddiviso [3]:

Il cimitero contiene il maggior numero di caduti canadesi in Italia[4].

Hitler was having his beauty nap and did not wish to be disturbed. The Nazis had their main battle group at Calais, not Caen when D-Day happened. The main German Battle Group did not engage the Allies in Normandy, instead they moved into Holland. The Battle of Arnhem was the worst loss the Americans and British suffered on the European Theater. It was then that Allied Command decided to send in the Canadians.

The Allies got over-confident they hadn't faced the main German Battle Group yet.

I remember Global News was interviewing people on the street on the 50th anniversary of D day. The majority of people had never heard of it. A lot of them, youngish Canadians. I mean people in their twenties. Not kids. I was talking to a woman at work a while ago. 34 years old who had never heard of the Falklands war. When I started to bug her about it, she started to get irritated and said "that happened before I was born".
