I've always been confused about it too...I'm probably one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet (well, most of the time, lol) and I have been treated like shit in other Canadian cities. People are nice to me at first and then they ask me where I'm from - I say 'Toronto' and their whole attitude tends to do a 180.

One time I was in a bar in Montreal - I was completely sober (was only halfway thru my first beer and was quiet as a mouse) and the lady next to me asked me where I was from - as soon as I said Toronto, she basically kicked me out of the bar (turns out she was the owner - who btw, was being very friendly prior to this). I did nothing wrong and I was literally in tears - I don't know how some people can be so cruel! And WE'RE the mean ones?! (A friend who witnessed this later told me that some other guys there said she had actually thrown me out because all the guys were looking at me and not her, but she used the Toronto thing as her excuse - regardless, it sounds messed up to me). Don't get me wrong...I love Montreal but now when I go there I actually tell people I'm from Chicago so they'll treat me with more respect.

It's funny too that so many Canadians in other cities say Torontonians are such horrible people; they seem to forget that a huge number of these 'horrible Torontonians' that they're referring to are actually originally from other cities/provinces! (Or other countries).

Why does the rest of Canada hate us so much?
Let me enlighten you, sir.

#1) The GTA is too damn big and suburban sprawl is getting very annoying. To visit friends you have to drive close to 150 km a day. Most people having to drive or commute to work who live outside downtown spend an average of 2.5 to 3 hours daily commuting. This is mentally unhealthy and stressful.

#2) The 401.

#3) Condo's.

#4) The multicultural setup is such that people of diverse cultures live next to each other rather than amongst each other and hence barely get to know about each other.

#5) Increase in street crime and gun shootings and violence. Over 20 people have been shot dead so far this year alone. Don't know what the rest of the year holds but it's getting worse (two killed last night!).

#6) Suburban area's are getting increasingly "suburban" and losing identity. You end up having to drive to go the local corner store rather than walk.

#7) The Toronto Maple Leafs

#8) People from Toronto have an attitude that they really have no business trying to enforce on the rest of us. Attitude in Paris? OK. But Toronto? Please.

#9) Toronto is (as everyone knows) the centre of time, space and the universe in general - snow falling in Toronto will inevitably cause a rift in the spacetime continuum. The greatest city known to man. Atlantis was but a pale imitation to the wonders of Toronto; Lake Ontario is composed of the tears of those that, beholding the city's glory, broke down knowing that their place of origin will never match Toronto. The inhabitants of Toronto know this well: they remind everyone of their city's splendour, and how no city on Earth will ever match it.

#10) Torontonians have an insular view of life in Canada. A Torontonian would go to a town like Middle-of-Nowhere, Saskatchewan, and be upset because they can't get Chinese food at 3 a.m.

And lastly, *From a twelve year old*

To me Toronto is dirty, polluted, smoggy, stinky, overcrowded, loud, the atmosphere is cold and rude, the crime is high, there are tons of freaks and psychos, tons of homeless people, no green grass, very little nature, extremely noisy, people shoot people instead of hunting animals for food, everything is 3 to 4 times more expensive than elsewhere, and nobody knows how to drive properly in the winter or in any season for that matter. When I go there all I want to do is leave because I dislike that environment immensely and it stresses me out, also there is always some crazy drunken wierdo around that usually ends up talking to you... It's not that I think all people in Toronto think they are better I dislike the city, its culture and its atmosphere and I cant see why anyone would like it and want to live there!

Well that just about sums it up.

I cant believe people think toronto is a "big" city. Its not. Go to london, New York, Paris, Chicago, these are all big citys. We have only around 3.5 million people. New York and the boroughs have a larger population than Canada. Our air quality is pretty good. Real estate values are still not as high as big cities. Our crime rate is nothing compared to big American cities. And the traffic is not really that bad. Have you ever tried driving in Manhattan or L.A.? I can only assume that people who think this way have never travelled. DJ1470 should buy a bus ticket, get out a little and see what the world really looks like, and stop calling people "shit for brains" it really makes you sound like a hick.

I strongly disagree - I've been to many other Canadian cities on numerous occasions. IMHO, the worst and most arrogant attitudes that I've encountered were definitely NOT in Toronto...I'll leave it at that and won't name any specific places because I believe there are good and bad people in every city. I will say I think the people of St. John's, in my experience, have been the friendliest!

I think Toronto's ok. It's multicultural, clean, safe, and has everything.

Compared to many other cities, I noticed it's very hard to make new friends. People are very cliquish, and it's very hard for an outsider to fit in. Just my experience.

For about $220 per hour you can make some very close friends very fast.

The most arrogant-attitude city I was in was Florence, Italy.

As for Toronto being arrogant... I'd say there are *parts* of the city where you'll run into arrogance

Where in Toronto did Conrad Black live again? Was it Rosedale? I remember reading that to get his new mansion built required that a few nice older houses had to be torn down.

I have to agree that Toronto has it's own network for friends, but you just have to go out and talk to random people and expand your network. I've done it on numerous occasions both in the U.S. and Toronto.

I do feel the bouncers at some nightclubs can have attitude, but not all of them. The road rage in this city is a major concern and gridlock is the biggest problem. Any other problem doesn't even come close.

Chicago is known for it's traffic problems.

Compared to Toronto, Chicago is no problem at all. During my stays in Chicago, I never found it near as bad is Toronto's.

The suburbs is not Toronto now is it.

The suburbs are home to people who want to live large and they can't afford to live large in the City. The homes in the city were built in simpler times when you didn't need a 1400 ft2 kitchen to cook a meal

dj1470 said:
#2) The 401.:
Actually, the 401 is an Engineering masterpiece. It handles more cars every day than any other highway in North America and that is a fact. There's quite a thrill to barreling along at 130 out by the airport and looking around and just FEELING the energy of it all.

If the highway intimidates you, take the bus.

dj1470 said:
#3) Condo's.
:
Condos are actually quite an efficient way to live. You have maximimum density requiring the minimum of services

I find it funny that your point No. 1 slags the suburban more is more attitude, and now you slag people who live the less is more lifestyle.

Exactly how do you think people should live?

dj1470 said:
#4) The multicultural setup is such that people of diverse cultures live next to each other rather than amongst each other and hence barely get to know about each other. :
Not entirely. True there are lots of ethnic areas in the city, however, this is human nature - to stick to your own kind. That said, I live in the High Park / Bloor West Area. It's very Ukranian / Polish / Russian. However, most of the Eastern Euros have been here for a very long time. At one time when Torontonians were flocking to the burbs, this area was relatively cheap. Then a funny thing happened and living in the inner city became very popular. Now, not too many immigrants can afford to buy a house around here. You get people of all sorts moving in now. My street is a completely diverse make up. There's only one guy who was born and raised here. Everyone else is from somewhere else.

I don't know where you are getting your information from, but you need to look up some crime statistics. Your odds of being involved in violent crime is far far greater in Regina than Toronto. Toronto doesn't even make the top 20 of most violent places in Canada.

Sure, there's violence, but given its size, you are very safe here.

But hey, don't believe me, believe Statistics Canada

This seems like your point No. 1., again, there are no real burbs in Toronto. Well, maybe parts of Scarborough and Etobicoke, but very small in term of the size of the city. You really don't have a clue of what you are talking about do you

dj1470 said:
#7) The Toronto Maple Leafs
:
The leafers aren't that good to be hated.

More like you have an inferiority complex.

No, we'd figure that that was the way it was in butt fuck nowhere and accept it. We would think fondly about how great a bowl of Noodle Soup from Swato would be right about then, but we'd be well aware that it wasn't going to happen any time soon.

Connie lived on the bridle path.

You're thinking of that nice Irishman - Gerry Swartz and his wife Heather Reisman who tore down some very amazing older homes in Rosedale.
