Ok, I'm gonna try to have a civil discussion with you guys and ladies as I'm really curioius about this, so don't start with the insults and arguing with eachother.

It's about tattoos. I don't have any, never had any desire, personaly I don't think it makes more attractive, and I have no idea what drives certain people to get them done. So I'm going to ask you why does one get them. Is it for power, rebellious statement against parents or society, to be cool, to show how tough you are, to make up for something lacking in your life, etc.... or do you really think it makes your body look better and you're more attractive to the opposite sex, or same sex, whatever.

As I said, a lady does not turn me on if they have them, although I'm starting to warm up to tattoos over the ass, especially in doggie, lol.

So be nice, I don't want a thread to get out of control, just your honest thoughts. Thanks

Don't care for them, don't like them on others

Unless the tats are extreme, I wouldn't turn down someone for a job for having them, though.

But I think it's unnatural. Is it a matter of self-expression, or is it a matter of following the herd?

Somehow, I think it is the latter, and I kinda doubt that they are done for any lofty goals other than vanity. Even though the young 'ins will say otherwise.

20 years from now when you're a soccer mom, biz exec, etc. ... still want it? Or are you gonna get it lased off? I wonder if these things are taken into consideration.

I don't mean to sound fuddy duddy, but this involves artificial self-mutilation ... for what? I would be concerned about potential health effects ... we've already got plenty of health problems to worry about.

I am like you in some respect that I don't have one, and have no desire to get one... maybe someday that will change, but as of now- I have no desire what-so-ever and Mrs. CG respects that. Nor do I have a desire to poke holes in my body...

However, I do find small inconspicuous sexy tattoos to be attractive on a female body, provided they are not overpowering. I also find certain body piercings to be alluring- e.g. belly button, pussy, nipple, small nose ring maybe... again, as long as they are not overpowering and are sexy in nature... I say go for it.

In any case, the tattoo or the piercing should compliment the person not be overbearing.

Just my nickel's worth...

I don't like them usually but I have to admit small cute ones like the little star on Juel are interesting. I grew up in a different generation where tattoo meant low life. On a man it meant sailor or lower class, on a woman it meant stut for sure. I am 55 so I don't want to be too judgemental about a younger generation.

In my mid-forties, I have no tattoos but have wanted to get one for a long time. I just haven't found the time to really figure out what I want. It will have to be a custom design that has some personal significance to me.

I find most of them, small and large, very attractive on women. It's a very interesting form of self expression.

I have one about the size of my palm, but you can't see it when I'm wearing a t-shirt. I did it when I was young and stupid, because I thought it was cool, at the age of about 20. I regret having had it done, a little, but not enough to pay money to have it removed. Now that I'm nearly 50, it doesn't look so cool anymore. When I was younger, some people would ask me if I was a gang member. Of course, I was not. If my kid's want to get one done, I wouldn't stop them. It's not a big 'mistake', just a little one. So, if they really want to, they can make that decision by themselves and live with it. It's not a big deal, really.

Tatoos.... now I don't have any, never will. People have different reasons for having them. I think that, when most people get older, they start to feel less positively about having the tat. Live and learn?

Mine are all to honour people I love - some passed, some not. In some weird way it gives me a almost a physical closeness (for lack of a better term) to them - not just the memories I have.

I have only one, on the side of my hips. But I'm planning to get a new one soon on the back of my shoulder.

I got my first tattoo for my birthday this year. I got it because I like the aesthetic of it. It doesn't mean anything: no deep meaning or story attached to it. I just find it pretty. I've always liked ink, although of course some tats I find less appealing then others, and way too many cliche tattoo out there.

I'm way too old for my tats to be considered a rebellion against my parents or society, and being "cool" has long stoped being a project of mine. I didn't get it to be more "attractive" to potential partners either, although people I'm attracted to and would want to get in their pants typically either have ink themselves and/or find ink appealing.

And of course, there's something to be said about the process of it too: the nagging pain, the aftercare, the getting used to a new tat on your body. That's appealing as well to me.

I'm not against tattoos that are reasonable in size and don't become an overwhelming focal point or totally define the appearance of the person - like an entire arm or back. If it doesn't show when the lady is dressed its typically less of an issue for me when the she is naked as I'm already distracted.

Beyond that I'm just not a huge fan of 90% of the art that typically constitutes the genre. It either looks like an album cover from a 1960's group like King Crimson or Cream, elaborate Goth or its cutsie, like your typical butterfly. I may have said " Hey, that's a great tat" three times in my life and I was probably lying one of those times. I don't mind small Haida-type art.

Having said that, I had major surgery about 5 years ago and have a foot-long straight incision scar that I always wanted to have tattooed like a zipper.

With all the respect for people who have them, I never understood why somebody would want to permanently "ink" his/her body. In my humble opinion it diminishes the natural beauty of human body. Having said that, I only have control over my own body and nobody else's. All I can say is if I want to look at "art" I much rather go to a museum, a gallery or browse through a Canadian Art Wholesalers store.

I have two tattoos, one on the thigh picked off a wall when I was young (23ish). I don't really regret it as it reminds me of my youth but it is not something I'd get now. The second I got when I was late 30s and is of a particular breed of animal on my upper arm. It was custom drawn by the artist and I get a lot of compliments on it. I am currently working on two others. One on the other arm and one large back piece done by a pretty well known formerly televised artist.

Someone said that they think most tattoo people are just following the crowd and for me that couldn't be farther from the truth. None of my friends or family had tattoos at the time I first got mine. If you walk down the streets of L.A. now you would be hard pressed to find someone without a tattoo. For myself, I actually just wanted to have one (the first one) that was hidden enough that only certain people would see it. The second was because I love body art and I love not only the animal but the certain breed. I find certain tattoos very attractive on both men and women. For me it is about the art and the originality and the story behind it.

As for jobs and what people think of me... well when I was a teen in the late 80s I had extremal long hair and was always judged because of it. As I got to my 20s I added several ear rings. I worked hard to over come people's preconceptions of me and when doors were closed I kicked them open. I ran public entertainment/recreational facilities across Ontario that dealt with very large numbers of kids, teens and adults. I was probably judged more than I knew but I was very successful at what I did.

If people continue to judge me based on the art work on my body then so be it I don't really care if they like it or not nor will I care what it looks like when I'm 70 or 80 and wrinkled. Everyone has their likes and dislikes, their beliefs and disbeliefs while I will always listen to other peoples points of views as long as they can be open to mine.

Between a rock and a hard place
I have one on my shoulder. Not custom designed for me, but not off the wall menu either. Personally selected by me out of a comic book. Not a superhero; somewhat amusing and goofy. Not Disney's Goofy. It amused me then, and just 11 years later, it is so out dated that noone recognizes the character. Like Madison Doll, I look at it as a marker of time.

I didnt do it to be cool or walk around with my shirt off onpurpose to be macho , i just think that tattoos are a brilliant form of art ...
I actually want more tattoos but because they are permanent I always take the time to carefully consider getting more before i take the plunge..
I have no regrets at all and very happy with my ink ..
I do find ink very hot on women ...very hot

I am not meaning to be judgmental here, but most of the tats I see are pretty rudimentary art i.e. the artist doesn't have much skill. Not always the case. Some are clearly remarkable, I am thinking of some of the Japanese sleeves.

I started with one small tattoo, and kept adding to it, it is now almost the size of my whole upper arm (outside), but all brought into one 'mural'.

I have always liked tattoos, but before I got my first one I had to make sure that it was something I wanted, was proud to wear, and was something deeply personal to me. That was probably why I waited until I was 25 to get it. My art is now a collection of things that are deeply personal to me, and a story of some of the best (and worst) times of my life. I keep them as a tattoo as a permanent reminder of what I have been through, and what I love, and what I have overcome. So some, it might look like a bunch of unrelated things, but each has its own story attached.

So, what am I reminded of from my tattoos?

Family
My country
My addictions
Important dates
The change of my life

I have a few more I need to add, which will make the tattoo almost a half sleeve. I really don't care if anyone likes it or not. I did it for me and my own personal reasons. Almost always it cannot be seen, unless I am seen without my shirt on.

For me, tattoos are unattractive, hence I don't have any myself. Seemingly I agree with Mia.Colpa, Cycleguy, and ig 88 on this.

It is interesting and eye opening, reading what those of you who do have them write about them.
