It seems I'm needing a new monitor. OK, not really need, but desire one. I'm currenty using a 17" goldfish bowl. My Viewsonic 19" PF790 is on the blink again and rather than invest in that [again] I'd prefer a change.

So, I'm looking into getting something between 19" and 21"

The Apple is a little out of my league and pretty unnecessary considering what I use my PC for, which is primarily TERB. However, I do appreciate a good quality picture and pleasing esthetics.

One dilemma I'm having, which may seem trivial, is whether to get silver or black. I feel black doesn't distract from the actual screen as much, but silver, if it's actually aluminum rather than just an alloy finish, would go well with my Lian Li case and can look very cool.

OK, so here are the models I'm looking into :

Samsung 193P -Silver- I like the thin bezel and the fact there are no visible controls (software adjustable) which generally look cheesy and distract from the look IMO. Picture quality is very good - high contrast ratio - I'd still be gaining 1" inch over my Viewsonic CRT. I can get it for around $800.

Samsung 213T - I'm not sure if I need that extra size, but it might be nice and I can set it to a higher resolution ( 1600x1200). It's usually around $1,300+ but I can get it for abt $1,099 in silver ( for some reason black at the same store is $170 more ) - bezel/controls look kinda cheap.

Viewsonic VP191S/B(S-$920,B - $681) or VP192B ( $725-$850), VP201S/B ($900) or possibly the VP211B ( $1,200 ) - I haven't had a chance to see these monitors yet, but heard they have a shiny surface which can cause glare - the VP912b is glass while the rest are panel surface - I'm not sure what the deal is with that. I like the narrow bezel, but find the overall look somewhat cheesy. I used to think the birds were cool, but am kinda sick of them ... heheh ...

I was also considering Planar, but can't seem to find a Canadian retailer

PX191.html

It seems that it's a toss up between picture quality, esthetics and size at this point seeing as with my budget of around 1G I can't get it all in one package.

The stand isn't important, as I plan to use a simple vesa arm

Any comments from someone who owns one of these or has insight into the subject would be much appreciated. Ultimately, I'd like to find somewhere that carries all these models and has them on display so I can compare if possible. I was over at Canada Computer on Yonge today and they wouldn't take the Samsung 193p out of the box - I picture it looking like a giant ipod, which I'm not too sure about.

I have a Viewsonic VA720....it's a 17 in LCD. I love it. It has a silver bezel that's about 1.5 inches across, and I've not had any problems with glare affecting my ability to read the screen...Good Luck...It took me a week of looking at different screens before I settled on one that I liked, and I have'nt regretted my decision once.....

I have a Samsung 152T and it great. I love the fact that it's has both analog and digital inputs. When you look at Samsung LCD monitors is that T meand dual input. This way you can have a older video card that is analog out.

I've been dealing with these two stores and they have by far the greated selection and prices. We all want to save a buck or two!

I recommend the viewsonic for people not willing to spend the money on Apple or Lacie monitors.

I have been researching reviews for many months on LCD monitors. I have been using a Sony 21 inch Trinitron one of the best of the old type monitors for many years (its huge and heavy).

The Samsung 213T is what I will probably buy. Zillions of reviews are mostly extremely positive vs most other choices. My only hesitiation is I don't have a DVI output on my video card which really need for it to show its stuff!

Will probably add newer video card. I have a top of the line from about 2 years ago Dell but didn't need more than the basic video card for the Sony monitor.

The old fishbowls are not so bad..

I traded my old 21 inch large monitor for a flat screen Dell - and I am not impressed witht he resolution - my old huge monitor was much better - I should have stuck with it.

Which model of Dell did you get? I have a 1704 (17") and it's very good.

I've had some problems with Tiger Direct over the years and I would not buy from them again. Check out Ben's Bargains for the daily specials, I think prices will drop significantly after the first of the year.

It's in USD, right ?... had me going for a second there.

thanks for all the input so far. I've added NEC to the mix and am contemplating if the cost of the UX series over NX is worth it. ( abt 300 - $400 )

here, there and everywhere!
I've never had or used an LCD monitor, and wondered what the difference between them and a "standard" monitor are? (I mean aside form the cool, thin futuristic look) Is the image clearer, crisper or better in some way? Is there less eyestrain in working with them for extended times? Or is it just a matter of them being newer and "sexier"?
I'm probably going to buy a new monitor in the New Year and wondered what selling points LCD's really have that I should consider (and I don't mean the marketing hype)
Thanks for any input you can give me on this.

The good article link posted below is very good.

But what turned me on... to LCD is looking at my friends relatively inexpensive LCD compared to my top of the line Sony Trinitron 21" CRT.

The LCD is far brighter, more brilliantly colorful than I had ever seen on a CRT. The small footprint compared to the tonnage and massiveness of my 21" CRT is a factor also, but the brightness and brilliance of the screen image is what sold me.

The screen size image of a 21" LCD is also larger than that on a 21" CRT.

try www.bbf.ca and you can see who's got "the best deals in the land". You can narrow search to GTA if you prefer.
