Call me harsh but I see no reason to replace food of the average person. If the plan was to compensate welfare recipients and people below the poverty line it would make sense but for some upper middle class person to get a gift card seems stupid.

As it was the holidays, some people would have been out of town, and unable to make such arrangements.

The day of the storm , and the day after , were above freezing, the nights were certainly cold , but freezing and thawing doesn't do a lot of good for food.

And if their fridge chose that time to breakdown they'd be 'entitled' to replacement food? Bad things happen. Responsible adults have someone checking on things when they're away; or they suck it up if they didn't.

Perhaps there are some folks so disconnected from reality that they don't know the refrigerator is above freezing when it's working, but freezing and thawing do not make food unsafe, just a little less desirable. With an abundant supply of free cold readily available to all, the acceptable excuses for letting expensive food spoil are very few.

Yes, I kept the doors closed for a bit but eventually took some stuff from my freezer and put in a cooler outside. Stuff was still frozen well after 24 hours in the freezer. My milk felt warm so tossed that and some leftover chicken, eggs, etc. But I am usually paranoid about that stuff anyways.

As an aside, a trick to know if your power/freezer was off/thawed while you were away on vacation:

Get a bottle of water and fill it half full with water and lay it on its side until the water freezes then stand it upright. The water will stay frozen sideways along the side of the bottle. If not, then you know your freezer was off.


A good trick for those who are sometimes away from their homes for long periods of time.
