ECC RAM will always command a price premium and will likely never be cheaper than it is now. I'll point out again that there's no advantage to this memory if you're using less than 8GB.

Oh, they'll come down with fabbing advances, but you'd have cheaper DDR3 ECC ram, of no use to you. The long-falling DRAM market just jumped 15% and if there's a general recovery coming, hugely depressed DRAM prices will be a thing of the past and you'll be paying significantly more within a year. As memory becomes obsolete and production slows and stops, which won't happen for years, the price always goes up. And if you're under the impression that ECC prices will eventually come more in line with regular memory, they won't because it's more expensive to produce and it's a niche product for big budgets.
