I recently installed majicJack on my old IBM ThinkPad. The majicJack works wonderfull. But it seems that since I installed it my computer is extremly and I mean extremly slow now. I thought there must be some way to turn it off while not using it to see if that will help (other then unpluging it and then pluging it back in every time I want to make a call)... but can't seem to find how to do that.

Maybe I just need to get a new computer... but since I am a little short on $$ these days... that's not gonna happen any time soon.

Any suggestions?

Thanks. TheNiteHwk

There is no way to turn it off other than unplugging.
Not sure how much CPU it uses, It slows my boot up time down as it has to load , but I havent noticed slower speeds other than that (1.7 gig Intel with a gig of ram, XP)

Ummm... OK thanks GB.

Slowing down my boot-up time also. I don't mind that too much. But it seems to be slowing down a few other things as well. Like the internet... takes forever to download anything at all. And watching U-tube vids etc... forget it.

Oh well... I am only gonna use it to make out going long distance calls... so maybe I'll just unplug it and then plug back in when I am using it.

Anybody else using majicJack?

You can buy it locally now btw... (I got mine at a computer store on College nr Chinatown) don't have to mail order.

There's a thread on it here somewhere in TECH and for the most part it got very positive reviews.

I like mine. Only use it in Canada to call back to US when visiting. In the US just about every cell, landline or VOIP offers calls to Canada free. Is that also true in Canada for calls to the US?

Not in Canada. Landlines here charge a monthly fee for what they call unlimited long distance to US and rest of Canada. I learned the hard way that Bell's so called unlimited long distance is not unlimited at all. There is a limit that when you go over they assume that you have a 'home office' doing business from home and suddenly they want to up your rates. I never had that prob with Rogers Home Phone though, but it does cost $29. a month or something like that. Not long ago ComTel had a sale on for $149./yr for both US and Canada. But majicJack I only paid $39.plus taxes and it's plug and play... came home, installed it myself and started calling... no contracts , nothing. It runs out after one yr from date I installed though... then have to renew.

Cell phones pretty much the same as above... you have to sign a contract and pay monthly fees.
