This man overboard off a cruise ship is not a rare occurance. Usually they are trying to commit suicide or were very drunk or were thrown off by a spouse etc.
For a sober person behaving normally it would be quite difficult to fall off by mistake.

I have never ever heard of the person overboard being saved before.

The man went missing late at night, so alcohol was very likely a factor. Most cruise lines have drink packages where you pay a flat fee and you have unlimited drinks. Carnival is one of the cheaper cruise lines so they push the drink packages heavily because that's where they make money. That's a bad combination on a ship.

Even sober people can do dumb things. There was a case a few years ago where a baby was dropped from an open window on a cruise ship by her grandfather.
