I'm surprised that no-one has posted about this one. First the poor unfortunate young woman was stabbed to death in Shoppers Drug Mart a few days ago by a random maniac. Then, a couple days later, a young cancer researcher was also stabbed to death on Gerrard Street just east of Yonge. Apparently, the victim did not know his attacker either. From what I've read, the victim here was a Phd in Bio Medical Engineering who did cancer research and also taught at Ryerson University. He was known to work a lot of hours and went out for a walk to clear his head and was attacked and stabbed to death. I've heard it reported that some punk simply wanted to rob him and ended up stabbing him to death.

WTF is going on in the city lately?
Half the population of the GTA being foreign born I'm sure has absolutely no connection to any of it.

Its sad but it happens- I have often walked along there late at night.

I listened to mccormack saying on the radio that these reason this happened was because not enough cops. As if magically the cops would have been exactly right there when it happened
Under a facists police state maybe.

Don't be shy- say it out loud
I am. It doesn't matter a tinkers dam whether you are a no-good bum from Pakistan or a no-good bum from Russia, the bottom line is that you are a no-good bum, and there there are plenty of no-good bums among the half of the population of Toronto who were born abroad.

I used to work a lot of long and strange hours maybe 5 or more years ago. Easily 12 to 14 hours every day and often would finish at 11 p.m. or later. Often, I would be hungry and would drive over to Yonge and Gerrard to hit "the Big Slice". If you got a slice that was just out of the oven, it was great. I used to park my car on Gerrard and walk over. Right where this man was killed. So I know the area very very well. There were always dirt-bags hanging out on the street, especially at the Big Slice. They would sit in the doorway, they would come in and pan handle, or they would just be sitting inside the joint. It was a huge pain in the ass and no-one who worked there seemed to do too much about it. (As futile as swatting flies I guess.) I used to think that if they played classical music inside the place instead of rap music that it would drive the dirt bags away, but I suppose it would have driven the customers away.

Anyway, the area was always "edgy". That's the best way I can describe it. Didn't matter what time of year, summer, winter, fall or spring. It always had that same vibe to it. Strange given where it was - right downtown, Eaton Centre, Ryerson. But also Covenant House, dive bars, porn peep shows, and yes, ironically, the Big Slice (which really seemed to be the epicenter of it all).

It doesn't completely surprise me that something like this happened here, but it still shocks me. (If that makes any sense.) It's such a waste of a talented man. The guy was highly educated, teaching others, and doing cancer research and he's killed over what? And to be stabbed to death as well. Brutal way to go.

Could have been me, could have been you, could have even been Twizz, could have been anyone just out for a walk. Just a guy minding his own business.
At the heart of it all, there is a luxury high rise condo at Yonge And Gerrard.

Some of those "edgy" people are from the Evergreen Youth Center For Street Youth building located beside The Big Slice since 1896.

The good news is that the Center is moving from Yonge/Gerrard to Spadina in 2017. It's high time to move such a thing out of the highly trafficked core.

https://www.ysm.ca/new-location-announcement-ysm-evergreen-centre-for-street-youth/

It'll be a boon for the Yonge/Gerrard area considering that many other changes are expected in that area already. For example, in 2018 a premium apt building with retail/commercial space at the ground level is opening its doors at Bay & Gerrard in what was a parking lot until last year (foundation is being dug right now). Rezoning application is underway for The Delta Hotel at Yonge & Gerrard for redevelopment into 4 towers as a condo/hotel hybrid and one mid rise building with additional walkway, retail, and commercial space http://urbantoronto.ca/news/2015/10/renderings-revealed-ambitious-eaton-chelsea-redevelopment

The rest of the vagrants loitering in that area come from the Covenant House which also needs to go. If they remove that, the place will reach its full potential as a perfect mix of safe University grounds and friendly core shopping.

Could save me the tax $$$ by giving him the death sentence
I dont mean to nickpit, but the death penalty is actually more expensive then life in jail because of all the lawyer fees while the whole thing drags out in court

And has next to zero deterrence due to the length of time and the lack of certainty of death between the time of the crime and the execution.

If you shot people on the street upon apprehending them THAT would be a deterrent, but you would also shoot a bunch of innocent people. Being sure you got the right guy before shooting him 30 years later isn't much of a deterrent.
