It appears that the Leafs still have quite a bit of cap space this year even after resigning Nylander. They frontloaded the first year to make the remaining years more cap friendly.

So wouldn't it make sense if they utilize whatever cap space they have now to structure similar deals for other rfa's like Matthews and Kapanan ?

There are rules for ELC's and Matthew's is in his final year of his ELC. Otherwise why would Matthews be playing his first few years for peanuts?

They'll use the cap space this year for rentals. Perhaps own rentals like Gardner. Even Doughty rental could be a possibility. Steep price though considering a 4th line center is a 2nd rounder.

Didn't they resign him to a long term deal ? The player should be an unrestricted free agent to be considered as a rental, someone like Simmonds from the Flyers may add some needed size and grit for the playoffs ?

Please, tell us how a Doughty "rental" would work?
The man is signed to a NMC contract (in other words, he ain't going anywhere unless he wants to),
that has 8 seasons remaining on it, with a cap hit of $11,000,000.

I don`t think they can do that.
It is the average that will be counted against the cap each year.

I don`t know if the Leafs front loaded the contract.
There is a formula for players who started during the season where the first year carries a higher hit than the rest.
There is some savings but it isn`t a lot and I doubt this is why they waited until now.

From CapFriendly:

We've now confirmed that the year 1 AAV & 2+ AAV are as follows:

2018-19: $10,277,778
2019-24: $6,962,366

Indeed you're right about Doughty. He's not a UFA. Just signed a long term contract at 11 per year so forget about him.

Do you notice something about Doughty? He's getting slower. In the west he may do fine but in the East where the teams have blazing speed, he'll look like a pylon we use to have. Fans will be boooing him. Trust me. The $11 mil he's getting now is reward for the past 2 cups he's won, I don't see the Kings getting back to the cup finals anytime soon.

Nylander is back. Leivo is gone. Leivo has been traded to the Vancouver Cannucks. I hope his game will get better out West. Another F comes back to the Leafs. This tells me that the Leafs are betting on outscoring opponents to win even if they have to that in the playoffs.

Lievo shoots right doesn't kill penalties and plays on 2nd PP. That is Willy. He's the obvious choice. Don't cry over a 4th liner. Leafs can still trade Brown for muscle

The NHL is moving towards skill and speed. Fighting is way down. Though the Leafs may need a big guy to keep a guy like Tom Wilson at bay, should the Leafs meet the Caps in the playoffs. Freddy the goat is 6'6" but I don't think he can fight.

The Oilers did it in the 80's. Todays NHL is less hitting and fighting. The Leafs might just pull it off.

Brown is a 4th liner so don't cry over him either. Of course don't trade him just for muscle. The guy's gotta be able to play hockey. None of this Courtnall for Kordic. There's no fighting in the playoffs and Leafs use their PP as a deterrent. The Leafs just have to not be intimidated when the opposition starts laying the body. Leafs could start getting injured though from the pounding ala Zaitsev from OV's hitting.

All of the Leaf forwards either play PP or PK or in the case of Marner and Tavaras both. Gauthier is the only one that can't do either. He can't do much 5 on 5 also. He's just big. That's his only redeeming quality. He's not in the top 12 so he'll get in only if there is injury. He's a big teddy bear. Doesn't scare anyone.
